JIMMY DARRAGH

FOOTBALL

Jimmy is a 1964 graduate of Greenwood High School. He was a three year varsity letterman for the football team. During his three years, the GHS team compiled a record of 30 wins, 2 losses, and one tie. Jimmy was a two way starter during his junior and senior seasons, playing guard on offense and nose guard on defense. He also took care of all the punting and kicking. During his senior year, Jimmy was named All Big 16 and All State. He also played in the NC/SC Shrine Bowl Game. After high school, Jimmy signed with Gordon Military College, where he was a two-year starter at guard and kicker. While at Gordon Military, Jimmy was drafted into the military and served his country in Vietnam.

LORENZO MATHIS

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Lorenzo is a 2013 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he had an excellent career in both football and track. In football, he was a two-way starter at running back and defensive back. He was twice named to the All Lakelands Team. He was a member of the 2012 Greenwood High School State Championship Football team. In 2011, Lorenzo set a school record by averaging 10.8 ypc. On defense, he finished his career with 140 tackles, 8 interceptions, and 3 forced fumbles. In track, he was a 3-time Region Champ and two time State Championship Finalist in 6 events. He also recorded the fastest 100m dash time in school history. Lorenzo signed to play football at Charleston Southern University, where he was a member of two Big South Conference Championship teams. In 2014, he was named Freshman All American Honorable Mention. He was named the best defensive back on the CSU team for four consecutive years and twice, he lead the nation in blocked punts. Lorenzo later played professionally for both the Ottawa Redbacks in the CFL and the Tampa Bay Vipers in the XFL.

OCTAVIOUS MORGAN

FOOTBALL

Octavious is a 2014 graduate of Greenwood High, where he was an outstanding football player. Octavious was a two time member of the All Lakelands football team. He was twice named All Region and All State. He was a member of the 2012 Greenwood High State Championship Football Team. In 2013, Octavious was named to the SC Shrine Bowl team. After high school, Octavious signed with Butler Community College, where in 2015, he led the nation in interceptions among Junior College players. Octavious later transferred to Texas Tech University, where he was named as the Conference Newcomer of the Year, while also earning second team All Big 12 honors.

OTIS DANIELS

BASKETBALL

Otis is a 2001 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he excelled in basketball. He was a four year starter, serving as team captain for three years. He scored 1782 points during his career. During his senior year, he averaged 21.5 ppg and 13 rpg, while helping to lead the Eagles to the State Championship finals. Otis was named to the All Lakelands team four times. He made All Region three times. He was twice named All State, and during his senior year, he was a SC Mr. Basketball finalist. Also during his senior year, Otis was chosen to play in the SC North South Basketball All Star Game, where he helped lead the North squad to victory. Otis signed an athletic scholarship to play basketball for Gardner Webb, where he was named as an Independent League Freshman All American. After transferring to Winthrop University, Otis was a member of two Big South Conference Championship teams and participated in the NCAA "March Madness" Tournament twice.

CHANDLER REARDEN

FOOTBALL

Chandler is a 2006 graduate of Greenwood High, where he was a standout offensive lineman for the football team. He made All Lakelands and All Region twice, and All State once. He played in the 2005 Shrine Bowl Game. Chandler was also named the 2005 GHS FCA Athlete of the Year. He signed a scholarship to play football for Lenoir-Rhyne. At Lenoir-Rhyne, Chandler had an outstanding career, again as a offensive lineman. He helped lead the team to the 2011 conference championship, which was its first since 1994. He was a 4 year letterman and two time team captain. He made All Conference 3 times and All American twice. In addition, two times Chandler won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, which is awarded to the best offensive lineman in the conference. He was also selected twice as the Lenoir-Rhyne FCA Male Athlete of the Year.

DA'VON DURANT

FOOTBALL

Da'Von Durant is a 2013 graduate of Greenwood High, where he was a dominating force on the football field as a linebacker. During his senior year, he amassed 107 tackles, 14.5 TFL's, 5.5 sacks, 4 fumbles for loss, and one interception. He helped lead the Eagles to a perfect 15-0 season and a state championship. For his achievements, Da'Von was selected All Region, All State, and Lakelands Player of the Year. He also was chosen to play in the SC-NC Shrine Bowl Game and the Blue-Gray All American game in Tampa. Da'Von signed an athletic scholarship to play football at Butler CC. At Butler, Da'Von made All-Conference and All American, while being selected as the top Juco linebacker prospect in the country. Da'Von later transferred to Marshall, where he finished his college playing career, but not before setting several school records in weight lifting.

JAD DEAN

FOOTBALL

Jad is a 2003 graduate of Greenwood High, where he excelled at punting and kicking the football. He was a member of the 1999 and 2000 State Championship football teams. He made All Region and All Lakelands 4 times. Jad made All State 2 times, and he played in the 2002 Shrine Bowl Game. He finished his career at GHS with the 5th best career punting average and, as a kicker, he finished with 193 points, which was second best in school history. Jad signed to play football at Clemson, At Clemson, Jad set records for fields goals in a game and in a season. He was named All ACC twice and All American once. He was the 2005 runner up for the Lou Groza Award, which is given to the nation's top college kicker. He finished his career at Clemson as the 3rd all time leading scorer in football history. In addition, Jad was a 3 time All ACC Academic selection.

KENNETH RICHEY

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Kenneth is a 1960 graduate of Greenwood High, where he lettered in football and track for two years. In football, he served as co-captain of the undefeated 1959 state championship team. He was named to numerous All State teams, and he was chosen as a Wiseman's All American. Kenneth was named to the 1959 SC Shrine Bowl team, a game in which South Carolina won 20-14. He signed a football scholarship with Furman. At Furman, Kenneth was chosen captain of the freshman team. In his sophomore year, he started at both offensive guard and linebacker. Kenneth then entered the Navy for several years. While there, he played football, and was named to the All Navy Pacific Conference team for 3 years. Upon an honorable discharge from the Navy, Kenneth returned to college and graduated from the University of South Carolina.

MATT MCMANIS

FOOTBALL AND SOCCER

Matt is a 2013 graduate of Greenwood High, where he was also an excellent kicker, in both football and soccer. In football, Matt set school records for the most points kicking in a season and in a career, and for the highest field goal and extra point percentages in a season. He also holds the school record for the longest field goal in school history, at 60 yards. In football, Matt made All Lakelands 3 times, All Region 2 times, and All State once. In soccer, he made All Lakelands 3 times, All Region once, and All State once. Matt signed a soccer scholarship to play for Presbyterian College. At PC, Matt was the leading scorer for the soccer team one season, as well as lettering for the football team. After two seasons, he transferred to the University of South Carolina, where he continued to play soccer. In 2016, he was named the winner of the USC Men's Soccer Coaches Award. Matt also made the SEC All Academic team twice.

SHEILA HAMILTON RHODES

COACH

After having an excellent athletic career as a player at Greenwood High, Sheila returned to her alma mater in 1987 as a coach. She coached volleyball, girls' golf, and softball, where she won two region championships and was twice named Coach of the Year. But, she really excelled as a basketball coach, as her overall GHS record was 234 wins and 97 losses. Her teams won multiple region championships. They were state runner ups one time, and they captured two state titles. Coach Rhodes was named Region Coach of the Year twice. She was also chosen as SCHS 4A Girls' Basketball Coach of the Year in 1994-1995. and in 1995-1996, she was selected as SCBCA Coach of the Year. Coach Rhodes also served as the head basketball coach at Lander University for 5 seasons, during which time, her teams had two 20 win seasons and advanced to the NCAA playoffs twice. In 1998-1999, she was named Peachbelt Conference Coach of the Year.

TEMORIS COATS

FOOTBALL

Temoris is a 2015 graduate of Greenwood High, where he was an outstanding football player. In 2011, he was named to the All State Freshman Team. In 2012, he was a valuable member of the State Championship football team. In 2013, Temoris made All Region and All Lakelands. In 2014, he had 175 tackles and 4 interceptions, while again making All Lakelands and All Region. He also played in the 2014 North South All Star Game. Temoris sign a football scholarship to play at Carson-Newman. At Carson-Newman, Temoris had an excellent career. He amassed 204 tackles, had 3 interceptions, and 26.6 tackles for loss, 18 of which were in one season, which is 3rd in school history. In 2018, Temoris was named All Conference and All Region. He was also nominated for the Cliff Harris award, which is for the Small College Defensive Player of the Year.

CHRISTIAN "BOO" POWELL

FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL

Boo is a 2009 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he excelled in both football and baseball. In football, he was a two year starter at quarterback and was an All Region punter in 2007. In baseball, Boo was an all around excellent player, but he was a dominating pitcher. He made All Region for four times. He was the Lakelands Player of the Year twice and he made All State twice. In 2009, he was selected to play on the North South All Star Baseball game. Boo was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 47th round of the 2009 MLB Draft, but he chose to accept a baseball scholarship to the College of Charleston. He made the SoCon All Freshman team in 2010. In 2011 and 2012, he made All Conference. Also in 2012, Boo was named SoCon Pitcher of the Year, when he compiled a 2.69 ERA, which the best in the SoCon that season. His 24 wins as a pitcher rank second in C of C history. After the 2012 season, Boo was drafted in the 8th round of the MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins. He competed for several years in their organization, as well as in the organization of the Houston Astros.

QUINN BACKUS

FOOTBALL

Quinn is a 2011 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he was an outstanding football player. Quinn made all region and all state in 2009 and 2010. In 2010, he helped to the lead the Eagles to a 13-2 record and an appearance in the state championship game. At the end of the season, Quinn was named finalist for "Mr. Football of SC". He was also picked for the Shrine Bowl and voted SC 4A Division II Defensive Player of the Year. Quinn signed an athletic scholarship to play football at Coastal Carolina University where he continued to excel. He was named Big South All Conference three times, and made FCS All American three times. In 2012, Quinn was named Big South Defensive Player of the Year. He finished his career at Coastal Carolina with 441 tackles, which ranks first in school history. Quinn was also named Academic All Conference three times. In 2021, he was voted into the Coastal Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. After college, Quinn played professionally for the Ottawa Redbacks in the CFL.

RAGEN REEVES

SOFTBALL

Ragen is a 2002 graduate of Greenwood High School where she was an outstanding catcher on the softball team. Ragen started and lettered for six years in varsity softball. She made All Region four times. She is the only GHS Softball Player to accomplish either of these feats. In her junior season, she helped to lead the Lady Eagles to their first playoff win in almost 20 years. Ragen batted .464 her senior year and her career batting average was .429. In 2002, she was named All State and participated in the North South All Star Game, where she caught the entire game and had a key single in a 1-0 victory by the North team. Ragen continued her softball career in college, as she signed a scholarship to play at USC Aiken. She started three years as catcher, before being unable to play her senior year due to a hip injury.

RICKEY SAXON

FOOTBALL

Rickey is a 1983 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was a standout defensive player of the Eagles' football team. Rickey was a three year letterman. He helped lead the team to a 19-4 record during his junior and senior seasons. He was named most valuable defensive lineman both years. Rickey was also an All Region Player in 1981 and 1982. In his senior season of 1982, Rickey was named Team Captain. He made All State and was chosen to play in the North South Football Game. Rickey is known as a Godly man with a big heart, especially for his family, friends, and neighbors.

SAM MONTGOMERY

FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL

Sam is a 2009 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he lettered in both football and basketball. As a senior on the football team, Sam recorded 85 tackles, including 11 for loss. He was named All Region and All State, and played in the Shrine Bowl. Sam also participated in the 2009 Under Armour All American Bowl in Orlando, FL. Coming out of high school, Sam was considered one of the top defensive end prospects in the nation, being ranked as high as #2 by ESPN. He signed a scholarship to play football at LSU, where he had an excellent career. He was named to the All SEC Freshman team in 2010. He was later twice voted to the All SEC team, as well as making All American two times. Sam also played in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game. Sam was drafted by the Houston Texans in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. In addition to the Texans, he played in the NFL for Oakland and Cincinnati. He also played professionally in CFL, AFL, AAF, and XFL.

TREVOR BEESLEY

TRACK AND CROSS COUNTRY

Trevor is a 2004 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he excelled in track and cross country. He was a five time letterman and was region champion several years in each track distance event and cross country. He qualified for the SC High School Track Meet five times. He won state championships in both the mile (twice) and the 1600 meters. He had multiple other top three finishes in cross country and track events at the State Track Meet. Also, while in high school, Trevor competed in the USA Track and Field Jr. Olympics, where he had several top three finishes at nation events. Trevor attended Winthrop University on an athletic scholarship, where he lettered four times in track and cross country. He set the school record for the steeple chase and recorded the second fastest time in school history in cross country. He also won several races while at Winthrop, as well as being honored by Winthrop and the Southern Conference for both his athletic and academic achievements.

D.J. SWEARINGER

FOOTBALL

DJ is a 2009 graduate of Greenwood High, where he was a three sport athlete, but he especially excelled as a football player. He was a four year starter for the Eagles, at times playing QB, RB, WR, and DB. As a sophomore starter, DJ was a member of the 2007 state championship team. As a senior, he was named a finalist in the "Mr. Football of SC" award. He made All State and played in the Shrine Bowl. DJ signed an athletic scholarship to play football at the University of South Carolina, where he became a three year starter at DB. During his career, he amassed 244 tackles and 6 interceptions. He played on the Gamecocks 2010 SEC East championship team, and as a senior he was named second team All SEC. DJ was drafted by the Houston Texans in the 2nd round on the 2013 NFL draft. During his rookie year, he had 65 tackles, forced 2 fumbles, and had 7 interceptions. In 2016, while playing for the Arizona Cardinals, DJ was named the 9th best free safety in the NFL. In 2017, he signed a multi-million contract with the Washington Redskins and he was named team captain of the defense. DJ played for the New Orleans Saints in 2019 and 2020. During his NFL career, DJ has been very generous in the Greenwood area with both his time and his financial contributions, especially helping out disadvantaged youths.

GENE CATHCART

COACH

Gene is a graduate of Daniel High School and Clemson University. In 1997, he was hired by Greenwood High School to be the offensive coordinator for the football team. The team had immediate offensive success, which helped it to claim state championships in 1999 and 2000. After leaving GHS in 2001 for other coaching opportunities, including the offensive coordinator position at Presbyterian College, where his team set numerous offensive records, Gene returned to GHS in 2009 as the head football coach. Success was again almost immediate. Over the next 5 years, Coach Cathcart's teams compiled a record of 58-12. That's a winning percentage of 83% and is the highest of any coach in Greenwood's storied football history. After the team made the state finals in 2011 and 2012, Coach Cathcart saw his 2013 team go 15-0 and claim another state title for Greenwood High. The 2013 team was only the third one in school history to go undefeated and the 15 victories remains a single season school record. Gene is currently the head football coach at Jefferson High School in Georgia, where he took his team to the state finals last year. His overall record as a head coach is 149 wins and 50 losses. This will be the 4th Hall of Fame to which Coach Cathcart has now been selected.

IRENE LEWIS

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

Irene received her Master's Degree from Appalachian St. University in 1972 and was hired soon after that to be a teacher at Greenwood High School in the fall of 1972. When she arrived on campus, she was surprised to find that there were no interscholastic sports for girls. Working with then Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, Pinky Babb, they began providing girls sports at GHS, with some being brought back after several years of dormancy and some being started up for the first time. Over the next several years, with the help of the school, the community, and the student athletes, Irene oversaw the starting up of girls' sports in the following areas: basketball, volleyball, track and field, tennis, and softball. Over the next 15 years, Irene served as head coach of each of these girls' sports, thus laying the groundwork for some of very successful GHS girls programs in the years to come. In 1987, Irene returned to her native state of California, where she has continued to work in the field of education and the coaching of high school sports.

TERRY WHITE

FOOTBALL

Terry is a 1985 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he was an outstanding offensive lineman for the football team. Terry was named all region three times, all state three times, and in 1984, he was named to the South Carolina squad to play in the annual Shrine Bowl game. After being named as Offensive Player of the Year by the Greenwood Touchdown Club, then GHS Coach Willis Burkett said Terry one of the most reliable, dedicated, and hardest working players that he had ever been associated with. Coach Burkett also said, "Whenever we needed a couple of yards, we ran behind Terry." Terry signed an athletic scholarship to play football at Winston-Salem St. University, where he continued to excel as an offensive lineman. He later became involved in community work, specifically with the group Men of Vision.

THOMAS WINGARD

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND TRACK

Thomas is a 1965 graduate of Greenwood High School. He lettered in football and track for three years and in basketball for two years. He was co-captain of the 1964 football team, as well as being selected for the North South All Star Game and the Shrine Bowl. He was also named as an outstanding GHS senior and "Mr. Emerald" in 1965. Thomas signed an athletic scholarship to play football at the University of South Carolina. He started every game for the Gamecocks until injuries cut short his career during his junior season. In 1966, he had been named a preseason "Super Sophomore" by a national publication. When he was injured during the 1967 season, then Gamecock Coach Paul Dietzel said the team just lost their most valuable lineman. While still at USC, Thomas later became the President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and President of his Senior Class. Thomas received his degree in Pharmacy in 1970 from USC. He owned and operated Wingard's Pharmacy in Greenwood for a number of years, as well as serving as mayor of Greenwood for 12 years.

WAYNE CRAFT

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

Wayne is a 1971 graduate of Greenwood High School. While there, he served a student trainer for both the football team and the baseball teams. After graduating from Lander University and going to work in Greenwood, Wayne became very involved as a member of the GHS Athletic Booster Club. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Booster Club for 26 years, serving as Board President for three times, while also serving terms as Vice President and Treasurer. Wayne has been a tireless worker for the Athletic Department and Head Football Coach, starting with Coach Babb in the late 1960s. Wayne has served as a scorekeeper for the football games. He has also volunteered to work in concessions for the football games, and he has almost singlehandedly run the concessions for the basketball games for many years. To say that Wayne has been a die-hard, loyal, and faithful GHS athletic fan is an understatement. Through the years, he has truly loved GHS, it's athletes, and all of the athletic programs offered.

WILLIAM WIDEMAN

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

William is a 1969 graduate of Brewer High School, where he was a standout on both the football and track teams. In football, he was a dominating defensive lineman. During his senior year of 1968, he helped to lead the Bulldogs to a 9-1 record, while being chosen as the team's defensive player of the year. William signed an athletic scholarship to attend NC A&T University in Greensboro, NC where he continued to excel on the football field. In 1973, he was named first team all conference in the Mid Atlantic Athletic Conference. William was drafted by the New York Giants in the 11th round of the 1973 NFL draft. At that time he was one of only a handful of players from Greenwood to ever be drafted by the NFL.

ASIA ARVA DELANEY

TRACK AND VOLLEYBALL

Asia Delaney is a 2009 graduate of Greenwood High School where she excelled in Track and Volleyball. She was named Girls Track MVP and Overall Track MVP in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. Asia was also named All Region Track 1-AAAA in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. She was Volleyball Defensive MVP in 2008. After graduating from GHS, she continued her education at the University of South Carolina on a full Track Scholarship. While at USC, and as a member of the 2010 4x100 relay team, she was named All American. In 2012, she also participated in the NCAA Outdoor National Championships in the 200 meter sprint.

BEAU HOLLINGSWORTH

FOOTBALL AND TENNIS

Beau Hollingsworth is a 1991 graduate of Greenwood High School where he excelled in Football and Tennis. He was a 3 time letterman in Football and a 5 time letterman in Tennis. Beau was Captain of the 1990 Football Team and was named the Greenwood Touchdown Club Player of the Year, Most Valuable Offensive Back of the Year, Hardees Player of the Year, GHS Leadership Award recipient All Region, and a Top 100 Player in SC. He was also named to and participated in the 1990 North South All Star football game. Beau compiled a remarkable career record of 24 wins and only 2 losses as a GHS starting quarterback. In 1991, Beau was Boys Tennis Team MVP, All Region, and State Champion Tennis Team Member. He was awarded a Football Scholarship to Furman University.

BUBBA SELF

SOCCER

Bubba Self is a 1992 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was an outstanding soccer player. He was Boys Soccer Co-Captain in 1992 and led his team to a Region 3-AAAA Championship and Upstate Finals while scoring 22 goals, Bubba was named a Region 3-AAAA All Region Player in 1989, 1991, and 1992; an All State Player in 1991 and 1992; and GHS Athlete of the Year for 1991-1992. He continued his education as Furman University where he was a 4 year letterman and 3 year starter for Paladin Men's Soccer Team. While at Furman, his team was Southern Conference Regular Season Champions in 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995; Southern Conference Tournament Champions in 1993 and 1994; and made a NCAA Tournament appearance in 1993. Bubba was Co Captain of the 1995 team, named All Southern Conference Player in 1994 and 1995, All Southern Conference Tournament Team Player in 1993 and 1995, and named tournament MVP at the 1994 Clemson University Invitational. He scored Furman's first goal in the Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium. Bubba finished his career at Furman with 22 goals and 14 assists, placing him at tenth place on Furman's all time scoring list.

CHARLES B. MAULDIN, III

SOCCER

Charles Mauldin is a 1994 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was a standout soccer player. He was named one of South Carolina's Top 50 players 3 times. Charles was named an All Region Player for 3 years and helped lead his team to 3 Upper State Championships. In 1994, he was a Team Captain and he played in the North South All Start Game where he scored 2 goals. Charles still ranks as a career leader in goals and assist at GHS. He continued his education at Lander University where he was a 4 year starter for the Men's Soccer Team with a record of 65-15-2. Charles was named to the All Conference Tournament Team in 1994 as a freshman. He helped lead his team to Conference Championships in 1995 and 1996. In 1999, he was named by the Index Journal one of the top 100 Lakelands Sports Figures of the century.

EDGAR "ANDRE" ELAM

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Andre Elam is a 1984 graduate of Greenwood High School where he lettered in Football and Track. He was a 3 year letterman in Football. In 1983, he was named All Region Running Back, All Area Running Back, and voted team Most Valuable Running Back. In 1984, Andre was named on the First Team All State Strength Team. He was also a 3 year letterman in Track where he helped lead his team to 3 consecutive Region Championships going undefeated all 3 years, Andre was named Team Captain in 1983 and 1984 where he led the team in points and was Most Valuable Player in Field Events. Andre started the tradition of "Great Greenwood Hurdlers". He continued his education at Saint Leo University where he earned his BA in Business Administration Management and BS in Healthcare Administration Management while serving 26 years in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he participated in Navy sponsored Track, Basketball and Football Teams.

FLOYD NICHOLSON

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Floyd Nicholson is a 1967 graduate of Brewer High School where he played Offensive Line and Defensive End in Football and ran 400 Meter and threw discus in Track and Field. Mr. Nicholson was selected to play in the High School All Star Football Game in Columbia in 1966. He continued his education at South Carolina State University where he also played Football as a Defensive End and Linebacker. Mr. Nicholson also attended Clemson University and the Institute of Government at the University of South Carolina and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Human Letters by Lander University. He is a retired educator and coach. He was a member of the Football Staff that lead GHS to the 1976 State Championship. Mr. Nicholson also served as an Assistant Principal at Northside Middle School. He was selected as an Outstanding Young American in 1984. Mr. Nicholson also served on numerous boards throughout Greenwood and South Carolina. He has served as Program Director for the Burton Center for Disabilities and Special Needs, Area Director for Whitten Center, President of SC Municipal Association, and Chairman of the Board of Deacons at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Mr. Nicholson served on Greenwood City Council for 11 years before he was elected as the First African American Mayor of Greenwood in 1994, where he served until 2008. In 2008, he was elected as the First African American Senator for District 10 in South Carolina, where he has served the past 11 years. He has received a number of awards including Outstanding Civic Leader and Educator by American Legion Post 224. Mr. Nicholson was inducted into the Greenwood County Hall of Fame in 2019.

G. LAVERN THRAILKILL

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

LaVern Thrailkill is a 1970 graduate of Greenwood High School. He was a two year letterman in both football and track. During his junior year, as the starting center on the 1968 state championship football team, LaVern opened many holes and was a reliable anchor for a team that featured one of the most prolific offenses in GHS football history. In 1969, he served as co-captain of the football team. He was selected to play in the 1969 Shrine Bowl game, where he made 13 tackles. La Vern also played in the North South All Star game. He signed a football scholarship with Clemson University where he became a starting lineman on the 1970 Clemson freshman team.

ROBERT LEE HAMRICK JR.

FOOTBALL

Robert was a 1962 graduate of Brewer High School where he excelled in football. In an era of athletics where statistical information was not well documented or preserved, Robert was known as a punishing fullback and a reliable weapon to opposing defenders. Teammates described him as big and bruising. He also participated in Track and Field and Baseball. Following his graduation from Brewer he was awarded a full athletic scholarship to South Carolina State University. His football career at South Carolina State was interrupted by service to the United States Army but not before he entertained professional offers to play in the Canadian Football League. Following his service to the Army, he returned to South Carolina and resumed his education at Wofford College. There he completed his degree in Sociology.

SUSAN SCOTT THOMPSON

COACH

Susan Thompson is a 1979 graduate of Greenwood High School where she lettered in Basketball. She continued her education at Lander College and following graduation served as a Head Basketball Coach in District 50 for 21 years. Her coaching career began at Emerald Junior High School and later included Brewer Middle School where she coached the 1997 squad to a perfect record. The following year, Coach Thompson accepted the challenge to rebuild the Girls Basketball Program at GHS where she served as Head Girls Basketball Coach for 16 years. During that time, she accumulated a number of accomplishments including a record 299 wins against 109 losses. Her teams won 8 Region Championships and made 14 trips to the State Playoffs and were Upper State Champions 2013-2014. Coach Thompson was named Region 1-4A Coach of the Year 6 times and was twice named SC Basketball Officials District Coach of the Year. She served on the staff of the 2007 North South State All Star Game and was the Head Coach in 2013. She has been a SCACA member for 21 years and served on SC Basketball Coaches Association Board of Directors 2012-2014. Her positive off the court influence on her student athletes is noted by the 100% graduation rate of her athletes during her tenure.

BRANDON MORTON

BASKETBALL AND TRACK

Brandon Morton is a 2001 graduate of Greenwood High School where he excelled in both Basketball and Track and Field. As a member of the Greenwood High School Track and Field team, Morton received many honors. He was All Region in 2000 and 2001. Morton was a two time individual region champion in the High Jump (2000,2001) and a member of the 4x400 Regional Championship Relay team in 2001. He concluded his high school career by winning the 2001 SC AAAA individual High Jump State Championship and was named to the All State Track and Field Team. In basketball he was a member of the 2001 Upper State Basketball Championship Team and received All Lakelands Basketball Honorable Mention. Morton continued his education at Winthrop University where he was twice named Big South Conference Champion in the High Jump and the 4x100 Relay. He was a two time NCAA First Round Qualifier in the High Jump and the 4x100 relay and named seven times to Big South All Conference Track and Field teams. After receiving his masters degree from Campbell University, he has coached 114 All Conference Performers, 30 Conference Champions, 20 NCAA Qualifiers, and 32 School Record Holders. Morton is currently the Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach at Converse College.

CHAD O. PHILLIPS, II

TRACK AND FIELD

Chad Phillips is a 2007 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was an outstanding member of the Track and Field team. He was a 4 year letterman and a 3 year All Region qualifier. In 2005, he placed 6th overall in the SC State Championships in the Triple Jump. In 2006, he was the runner up in both the high jump and long jump in the SC State Championships where he garnered All State honors in both events. In 2007 he won the SC State Championship in the High Jump and Triple Jump and was State Runner Up in the Long Jump. Phillips earned All State Honors in the Triple Jump, High Jump, Long Jump and the 4x100 Relay during his senior year and was selected as Gatorade Athlete of the Year in Track and Field for South Carolina. He continued his education and Track and Field Career at Coastal Carolina University. In 2009 he qualified for the NCAA East Regional in Track and Field (Long Jump). In 2010, he won the Big South Outdoor Championship (Triple Jump) with a school record jump. Phillips set many records during his career at Coastal Carolina University and at the conclusion of his career held the school record for Triple Jump and was second all time in the Long Jump.

CHRISTIE TODD

BASKETBALL AND SOFTBALL

Christie Todd is a 1993 graduate of Greenwood High School where she excelled in Basketball and Softball. She was selected as Softball All Region in 1992 and 1993. In 1992, she batted .444, scored 31 runs, and stole 32 bases. In 1993, she batted .378, with a .589 on base percentage, scored 41 runs, and was a perfect 48 for 48 in stolen base attempts establishing a new South Carolina state record for Most Consecutive Stolen Bases in a season. Todd had a high school career record of 119 stolen bases. In 1993 she was named Basketball All Region with average of 8.3 points per game, had 52 steals, and 45 assists. Todd continued her education and softball career at Charleston Southern University where during her freshman year she stole 45 bases that ranked as the sixth most all time in a season for the Big South Conference. Following her freshman year, she transferred to Augusta State, where she earned a number of honors. Todd was named Peach Belt All Conference in 1996 and 1997 and to the Peach Belt All Tournament Team in 1996. At the conclusion of her career Todd ranked seventh all time in the Peach Belt Conference for Stolen Bases in a season (42). While at Augusta State she set or tied 10 softball records including career batting average (.404), runs scored (94), and stolen bases (79). She was named 2015-2016 Teacher of the Year at Freedom Park School.

DAVID HOLLOWAY

BASKETBALL

David Holloway is a 1987 graduate of Greenwood High School. While attending GHS, Holloway was a standout basketball player. During his a career at Greenwood High, Holloway received a number of basketball awards. He was selected All Region three times, All State two times, and named Lakelands Basketball Player of the Year two times. In 1987, Holloway was named Anderson Independent's Player of the Year and was also selected to play in the South Carolina North/South All Star Game. Holloway continued his education and Basketball career at Anderson College. He was a two year starter at Anderson College.

DRAYTON "DADDY" DORN

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL

Drayton "Daddy" Dorn was a 1931 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. In football, during his senior year, he was selected as team captain and voted Most Valuable Lineman. In baseball, he was an outstanding infielder who was a member of the 1930 State Runner Up Team. Dorn signed an athletic scholarship with Clemson but transferred to Furman during his freshman year. He became a standout football player at Furman, where he was a three year letterman. He was named to the All State team three times and once voted on the All South Region team. During his six games he played against Clemson and South Carolina, he helped lead Furman to an undefeated record against both teams, the last of which was an 8-6 victory over the Tigers, which happens to be Furman's last win over Clemson. In 1940, Dorn was selected as one of the eleven best college Football players to ever play in the state of South Carolina. In 1968, he was inducted into the Furman University Athletic Hall of Fame.

KIM HUCKABY

SOFTBALL

Kim Huckaby is a 1993 graduate of Greenwood High School. She was a five year letterman in softball where she earned a number of honors during her career. Huckaby was a two time team MVP and two time All Region performer. A catcher, Huckaby was exceptional at throwing out would be base stealers. In 1992, she batted .346, stole 24 basses, threw out 29 of 45 would be base stealers for a caught stealing percentage of 64%. In 1993, her senior year, she batted .318, stole 26 bases, and threw out 20 of 34 would be base stealers for a caught stealing percentage of 59%. Her high school career culminated in 1993 when she was named Region 1-AAAA Softball Player of the Year, CAWS All Star, CAWS All State, and CAWS AAAA Softball Player of the Year. Huckaby continued her education and softball career at Lander University where is 1994 she was named to the Peach Belt Conference All Tournament Team.

MIKE ADAMS

FOOTBALL AND WRESTLING

Mike Adams is a 1976 graduate of Greenwood where he lettered in both Football and Wrestling. As a senior he was a two way football starter at offensive guard and linebacker where he led his team in tackles along with 3 interceptions on an 11-2 squad. As a Junior, Adams was a member of the first ever Greenwood High School Wrestling team. He earned two varsity letters while helping to establish the program and qualified for the State Championship Tournament both years. Adams was the first GHS athlete to wrestle in a State Semifinal Championship wrestling match. He continued his education and football career at The Citadel. There Adams was a three year letterman and would receive a number of honors including being named an AP All American (honorable mention) at Defensive End in 1979. That same year he was selected as a Southern Conference Player of the Week and was named First Team All Southern Conference and the Citadel's Defensive Player of the Year. Adams' work ethic, grit, and determination were hallmarks of his career and resulted in his being named team captain for the 1979 Citadel Squad. Adams is an active member of the Greenwood Community and is past president of the Greenwood Touchdown Club and a founding board member of the Lakeland's Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

ARMANTI EDWARDS

FOOTBALL

Armanti Edwards is a 2006 graduate of Greenwood High, where he was a two year starting quarterback for the football team. He had a highly decorated career at GHS, setting numerous records. Among those are: he is the only QB to throw 4 TD's in a game and he did it twice. He holds both the single season and career record for completion percentage. He holds the record for most yards rushing by a QB in a season and career. Armanti wrapped up his high school football career by being named a finalist for the SC Mr. Football Award by playing in the 2005 Shrine Bowl game. He sign a scholarship to attend Appalachian State University, where he continued to excel. After playing four years at App St., Armanti held over forty school football records, including the most passing yards in a game, a season, and a career, and the most yards rushing by a QB in a game, a season, and a career. Upon graduating from App St., Armanti was drafted in the third round of the NFL by the Carolina Panthers, where he played for three years. He also played for the Cleveland Browns and the Chicago Bears. Armanti is currently a starting wide receiver for the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League.

BILL CORLEY

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND TRACK

Bill Corley is a 1955 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was a three sport letterman in football, basketball, and track. Bill was an outstanding lineman for the football team and he served as captain for the 1954 team. In addition to playing in the 1954 Shrine Bowl Game, Bill was named to the 1954 NHS All American Football Team. He was also selected as a member of the National Athletic Scholarship Society. After high school, Bill signed an athletic scholarship to attend the University of South Carolina where he lettered in freshman track and basketball. He later transferred to Newberry College where he lettered two years as a center for the football team. Bill later did graduate work at Georgetown University before becoming a coach and administrator. He holds a Master Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling and a PhD in Administration. Bill has been active in his community chairing the Easter Seals Committee, a member of the Lions Club, and serving as President of his Sunday School Class. Bill has served as Deputy Director of Georgia Rehabilitation Agency and served as a National Rehabilitation Facilitator Specialist in Washington, DC.

BILLY SYMMES

FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL

Billy is a 1931 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he was an outstanding football and baseball player. After graduation from GHS, Billy attended The Citadel, where he lettered in four sports; including football, basketball, baseball, and boxing. He was elected captain of the football team his senior year and he twice made All State as a center of the football team. He was inducted into The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame in 1983. After graduating from The Citadel, Billy received an appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point. While there, he won the heavyweight boxing championship for the Academy. This was in addition to having a very successful amateur boxing career. Billy went on to serve his country in both World War II and The Korean War. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was awarded the Bronze Star in 1953 for heroic duty during the Korean War.

JOSHUA R. NORMAN

FOOTBALL

Josh Norman is a 2007 graduate of Greenwood High School where he participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track. Josh especially excelled on the football field, and he was the only two way starter for the 2006 GHS State Championship Football Team, playing both wide receiver and defensive back. During his senior season, Josh was named All Lakelands, All Region, and All State. He was also selected to participate in the North/South All Star Football Game. Josh continued his education as Coastal Carolina University, where he was a standout on the football team. He was named First Team All Conference for three years, and in 2011, he was voted as a FCS All American. In 2012, Josh was drafted by the Carolina Panthers, becoming the third CCU player to be drafted by the NFL. In 2015 while with the Panthers, Josh played in the Pro Bowl, the Super Bowl, and selected as a First Team All Pro. In 2016, he was ranked 11th in the Top 100 NFL players. Josh is currently a cornerback with the Washington Redskins. He has also served as a broadcaster for NFL games on Fox Network. Josh has been very generous to Greenwood, by hosting numerous events through his foundation, Starz24.

LES RICE

FOOTBALL

Les Rice is a 2001 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he was a three year starting offensive lineman for the football team. Les was named All Lakelands and All Region in 1998, 1999, and 2000. He was an All State Honoree in 1999 and 2000. He was a member of the 1999 and 2000 State Championship Football Teams and he played in the 2000 North/South High School All Star Game. During his senior year, he was ranked as one of the top 10 players in SC and he was nationally ranked in the top 100 of the National High School Sports Reporter. He was also named as a Wendy's Heisman candidate. Les continued his education and his football career at Coastal Carolina University, where he was a three year starter as an offensive lineman. He was a member of the 2004 and 2005 Conference Championship Teams, as well as being named 2nd team All Conference in 2005. An injury in his last game prevented his pursuit of a professional football career. Les graduated from CCU with a degree in Sociology and worked at Greenwood DSS for five years, during which time he received Outstanding State Employee Award. He is currently a Student Support Facilitator at Westview Middle and an active member of Macedonia CME Church.

MACIE RICHARDSON-YARBOUGH

VOLLEYBALL, BASKETBALL AND SOFTBALL

Macie Richardson-Yarbough is a 1983 graduate of Greenwood High School where she lettered in volleyball, basketball, and softball. Macie was named MVP in both volleyball and softball three times. During her softball senior season, her batting average was .515 and she set a GHS record with 10 home runs. She also had an errorless season and was named All Region. In basketball, Macie was a three year starter, where she was the teams leading rebounder for three years. During her senior year, she averaged 9.1 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. Macie continued her education at Lander College, where she played basketball and softball. In basketball, she averaged 10 points per game and was the team's leading rebounder for three years. In softball, Macie was named All District in each of her four years. She set the schools home run record of 8 in one season, while having a batting average of .521, and slugging percent of .729. Macie is currently active in her church where she sings in the choir, has served as financial secretary, and Sunday school teacher.

THOMAS BRYAN STODDARD, JR

TENNIS

Thomas Stoddard is a 2004 graduate of Greenwood High where he was an outstanding tennis player. Thomas was named All Region four times, as well as being ranked #1 in State for four straight years. In his senior year of 2004, Thomas was the 4A State Individual Tennis Champion, as he capped off an undefeated individual season with a perfect 23-0 record. As a result of his excellent play, Thomas was named South Carolina's "Mr. Tennis" in 2004. Overall, he compiled a record of 82 wins and 9 losses, which is the best four year win/loss record in school history. He continued his education at University of South Carolina where he lettered in tennis and was named to the SEC Honor Roll all four years. Thomas played singles and doubles during each year of eligibility at USC and was elected to the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. He is currently employed by Labcorp, where he has achieved quota every year of employment and achieved a top 5 ranking among sales employees. Thomas is also an active member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church.

ZEARRICK MATTHEWS

FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL

Zearrick Matthews is a 2005 graduate of Greenwood High, where he played football and basketball. Zearrick was a two year starter at quarterback for the football team. During his football career at GHS, he was named Player of the Game numerous times, as well as being named All Lakelands and All Region in 2003. During his senior year, he was listed as a High School Sports Reporter Top 100 Senior Prospects. Zearrick was the first quarterback in GHS Football History to reach 1,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing in a single season. Despite being injured during his senior year, he still recorded 37 touchdowns during his years as a GHS Eagle, which ranks him sixth in school history. Zearrick signed an athletic scholarship to attend Marshall University where he continued playing football. As a freshman in 2006, he started all 12 games. He recorded 46 tackles, forced four fumbles and had one interception for a touchdown. Because of this, he was named to the All Conference Freshman Team. After completing his football career at Marshall, he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Sports Management and Marketing. Zearrick is a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

BOB MORRIS

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Bob Morris is a 1969 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played football and track. He was a three year letterman for the football team. Bob was a standout lineman for the 1968 State Championship team that is considered one of Greenwood's all time best teams. He anchored the offensive line for a unit that average over 30 points per game and he plugged holes for a defense that recorded six shutouts and yielded less than seven points per game. He was selected to both the 1968 SC Shrine Bowl team and the 1968 North/South All Star team. After graduation, Bob accepted a full scholarship to the University of South Carolina where he played football from 1969-1972. Bob graduated from dental school in 1977 and has been a practicing dentist in Gaffney since that time.

DANNY K. MOORE

FOOTBALL

Danny Moore is a 1982 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played football in 1980 and 1981. He was all conference in both 1980 and 1981. Danny selected to the 1981 SC Shrine Bowl team. After graduation, he attended Winston Salem State University, where he played football. He was a four time CIAA All Conference selection from 1983-1986. He was also a Kodak Division II and SBN Black College All American in 1985. Danny was inducted into the Winston Salem State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. He serves on the Winston Salem State advisory board. He is a YMCA Volunteer and serves as deacon at Trinity Chapel Church in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

FRANK RUSSELL

COACH

Frank Russell is a 1948 graduate of Laurens High School and a 1952 graduate of Furman University where he attended on a football scholarship. After graduating from Furman and serving two years in the US Marine Corps, Mr. Russell joined the faculty of Greenwood High School, where he served as an assistant coach for football and the head coach for basketball and track. During Coach Russell's ten year tenure at GHS, he was the only assistant football coach on Coach Pinky Babb's staff. During those years, the football team won three state championships and was the state runner up one time. In 1968, the Greenwood County Vocational Center opened and Frank Russell became its initial director. In 2004, the South Carolina General Assembly voted to change the name of that facility to the G. Frank Russell Career Center. In June 2005, Coach Frank Russell retired after 50 years of dedicated service to Greenwood School District 50.

JACK OWENS

FOOTBALL AND TENNIS

Jack Owens is a 1990 graduate of Greenwood High School where he starred at both football and tennis. He was a 3-year football letterman and in 1989 was a team captain. A tight end who was both a gifted receiver and powerful blocker. In 1989 Owens was selected All Region, Honorable Mention All State, a SC Shrine Bowl participant and the Greenwood Touchdown Club Player of the Year. He also lettered 5 years in tennis, was selected All Region in 1988, 1989, and 1990. He led the Eagles from his #1 singles position to claim the 1990 team AAAA State Championship. He was also named to the All State Tennis team during the 1990 season. Following graduation, Owens attended Furman University on a football scholarship and was a letterman in both football and tennis. He also accomplished a rare feat in earning SoCon team Championship rings in football and tennis. In 1994, Owens was the honored recipient of Furman University's Purple Heart Award given for his commitment to Furman athletics.

JOSEPH LLOYD

TENNIS

Joseph Lloyd is a 1999 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was an outstanding tennis player. In four years of playing varsity tennis, Joseph only lost one regular season match. He played #2 singles his freshman and sophomore years and he played #1 singles as a junior and senior. He also played on the #1 doubles team for his entire four year career. Joseph was named All Region and All State for four straight years. In 1998, he was named the Region 1 4A Player of the Year and Anderson Independent Player of the Year. He also finished 2nd in the SC State 4A individual tournament. After graduation, Joseph received a tennis scholarship to Erskine College we he made 2nd team CVAC All Conference. Joseph currently works with Lloyd Roofing Company and he is a member of North Side Baptist Church.

JULIUS PINSON

COACH

Julius Pinson is a 1968 graduate of Greenwood High School where he lettered in football and tennis. After graduation, Julius attended Lander College. While at Lander, Julius worked as part-time assistant coach for the GHS Football Team for three years. After graduation from Lander, Julius became a fulltime member of the GHS Football staff, where he served for the next 37 years. Julius worked under four different head coaches and served in a variety of jobs, which included coach, athletic trainer, and equipment manager. Julius was a member of four GHS Football State Championship teams. In addition, he coached the 1984 GHS tennis team to the State Championship. Julius is a 35 year member of SC Shrine Bowl Football staff.

KYLE BEHRENDT

BASEBALL

Kyle Behrendt is a 2006 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was a standout baseball player. During his high school career, Behrendt was a feared hitter with exceptional base running prowess and played a stellar defensive shortstop. He was twice named All Region as a shortstop. His senior season he was chosen to play the South Carolina North-South All Star baseball game. He was also named to the High School Sports Report All State team as a senior. Kyle was a scholarship athlete at Wofford College. There he was a four year starter and four time SoCon All Academic Team member. In 2010 he was named SoCon player of the month and also to the SoCon All Conference Team. Kyle left an indelible impression on Wofford Baseball and at the conclusion of his playing career ranked 1st All Time in career doubles, 3rd in career runs scored, 4th in career base hits, 7th in career games played, 8th in career RBI's and 10th in career stolen bases.

RUTLEDGE "RUT" HAMMOND

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

Rut Hamond is a 1953 graduate of Greenwood High School. During his 35 years of service to the Greenwood High School Athletic Department, Rut has served in about every capacity a volunteer could possibly serve. He has been a bus driver, a spotter during football games, a clock operator, and a scorekeeper. He also helped with the washing and preparation of uniforms. For many years, Rut did a great job helping to maintain the football field, by cutting the grass, marking the field, and performing other important game day field duties. Rut has proudly served his alma mater with grace, loyalty and dignity. He is currently a member of Tranquil United Methodist, Greenwood, South Carolina.

WALTER GOLDMAN

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, AND TRACK

Walter Goldman is a 1961 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played football, basketball and track. He was a 3 year starter on the offensive line for the Eagles. He was a member of the 1959 state championship team. He was a Co-Captain in 1960 and he was an All State selection and a Shrine Bowl Selection that same year. He was also selected to play in the North/South game in 1961. In basketball his team went to the Final Four in 1961 and he was named All State. After high school, he attended Clemson University where he played football for one year before sustaining a career ending injury. Walter worked as a Market Manager and Vice President in industry for 32 years and is a deacon at First Presbyterian Church, Greenwood, South Carolina.

BEN MARTIN

GOLF

Ben Martin is a 2005 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he was an outstanding golfer. He earned All Region honors twice and All State honors twice. He was voted the 2005 GHS Male Student Athlete of the Year. He signed a scholarship to play golf at Clemson. While at Clemson, Ben was voted All Conference three times and All American once. He was selected as the 2010 Clemson Male Student Athlete of the Year. Also while at Clemson, Ben finished runner up in the 2009 US Amateur Golf Tournament and he also competed in the US Open and the Masters golf championships. Ben turned professional in 2011. He played two years on the Web.com Tour, where he had two wins and finished second on the money list in 2013. Now in his third year on the PGA tour, Ben has one victory and eight top ten finishes. In 2015, he has been ranked as high as #48 on the Official World Golf Rankings

CHIP WHITT

GOLF

Chip is a 1988 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played and lettered in golf for four years and was named Golf MVP each year. During his golf career at GHS, he received a number of other awards including All American, All State, All Region, Southern Cross Champion, and he participated in the 4-A State Golf tournament as an individual. After graduation, Chip signed a scholarship to play golf at Clemson. Since graduating from Clemson, Chip has been a five time Greenwood Country Club Champion, 2004 Festival of Flowers Champion, 2007 Mid-Am Four Ball Champion, 2008 and 2009 SCGA Four Ball Champion, and a four time SCGA Palmetto Cup Matches participant. Chip is currently a teacher at G. Frank Russell Technology Center where he was named Teacher of the Year for both 2009-2010 and 2014-2015 school years. He is also the current Girls and Boys Head Golf Coach at Greenwood High School.

GREGORY DVON HILL

FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL

Dvon Hill is a 2002 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he was an outstanding football and basketball player. In football, Dvon was a member of the 1999 and 2000 State Champion Football Teams. His junior year, he was voted Best Team Wideout with 52 catches, 876 yards, and 14 touchdowns. In his senior year, Dvon was again voted Best Team Wideout with 65 catches, 1000 yards, and 10 touchdowns. He was ranked as 11th best player in the state, and he played in the North/South Football game, where he had 7 catches for 65 yards. In basketball, during Dvon's junior year, he was a member of the 2000 State Championship Basketball Runner-Up Team. During his senior year, Dvon was named Team MVP and he played in the North/South Basketball game, where he scored 21 points. Dvon continued his education at University of South Carolina where he also played football. He graduated USC in 2008.

H.C. (BUDDY) MATTHEWS

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND TRACK

Buddy Matthews is a 1953 graduate of Greenwood High School where he excelled in football, basketball and track. As a freshman in 1949, he was one of two players that made the Varsity Football Team which went undefeated and was voted State Champions. Buddy was a Football Co-Captain during his senior year. During his football career at Greenwood, he set a number of school records, including touchdown passes for a season (13) and a career (19), and he recorded the first 100 yard passing game (101 yards) in GHS football history in a 1951 game against Anderson. While participating in track, Buddy placed third in the Low Hurdles at the State Track Meet. After graduation, he joined the US Air Force. After returning home from the military, he went into the food service business and in 1985 he opened and operated Montague's Restaurant until he retired in 2010. In 1989, he started a yearly free Christmas Day on Christmas Day for the less fortunate. Buddy is a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church.

JOHN HENRY TERRY, III

FOOTBALL

John Henry Terry is a 1986 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he was an outstanding football player. While playing football at GHS, he received a number of awards including All Region, All State, and Shrine Bowl Alternate. John continued his education at John C. Smith University and Livingstone College. While playing football at Livingstone College, he again received a number of awards. John was two time All Conference, two time Team Most Valuable Offensive Lineman, and he received the Baxter Holman Award given to the top student athlete. In 1992, John was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys, and in 1993, he signed as a free agent with the Chicago Bears. Then in 1994, John began a nine year career in the Canadian Football League during which time he received a number of awards. He was named Team Lineman of the Year for three consecutive years and he was also named a Western Conference All Star for three consecutive years. John has participated in the Brain Injury Association of Toronto Charity Basketball Game and served as a volunteer football coach for the OVFL Brampton Bulldogs. He has also appeared in the movie "Four Brothers", ESPN Sports Series "Playmakers", and some Canadian commercials.

RENALDO Q. GRAY

FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL

Renaldo Gray is a 2003 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he played football and basketball. Renaldo was a member of the 1999 and 2000 State Championship Football Teams. In 2001, he was named All Region Tight End and Defensive End in Football and Team Defensive Player of the Year in Basketball. In 2002, Renaldo was voted to the All Lakelands Football Team, and he made All Region Quarterback. He was also selected as a quarterback for the North/South Football Game. In basketball, he was named All Region. He went on to continue his education at Furman, where he excelled in football. In 2005, he was selected as a SOCON Player of the Week. In 2007, Renaldo was named Furman Team MVP, Best Offensive Back, and Top 10 in total yards in one game. He also received the Captain award. He is currently a Certified High School Strength and Conditioning Specialist and has worked with numerous MLB, NFL, and CFL professional, collegiate, and high school athletes. Renaldo has helped Performance QSA grow into one of the largest fitness facilities in the Upstate of South Carolina. He has volunteered in schools, made multiple speaking engagements, worked with Habitat for Humanity, Wounded Warrior Project, and Julie Valentine Center in Greenville, SC.

ROBERT ANDERS

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND TRACK

Robert Anders is a 1979 graduate of Greenwood High School where he lettered in football, basketball and track. He was a member of the 1976 State Championship Football Team. Robert was named All Region Tight End in 1977 and All Region Tight End and Linebacker in 1978. In 1978, he was named an All State Linebacker and played in the Shrine Bowl. Robert continued his education at Furman University, where he was a two year starter at Defensive End on the football team that won four consecutive Southern Conference Championships. He was also named Player of the Week twice for Furman University during his senior year. Robert currently serves as President and CEO of Holston Gases, Inc. in Knoxville, Tennessee. He has served on a number of boards including Knoxville Metropolitan Planning Commission, Board of Directors for Big Brothers of East Tennessee, United Way of Knoxville, St. Mary's Hospital, and a member of Leadership Knoxville Class of 2000. Robert is an active member of the Grace Baptist Church in Knoxville.

Andrey Spearman is a 1994 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played offensive tackle for GHS Football. He was rated the #15th player in the state by Super Prep Magazine, played in the Shrine Bowl, named All State and All Region Player, named one of the state's top players by Deep South Recruiting Guide, Honorable Mention All American by Blue Chip Illustrated, and Most Valuable Offensive Lineman in 1993. Andrey continued his education and played football as an offensive tackle at the University of South Carolina where he was a three year starter. He was part of USC's first ever bowl win in the Carquest Bowl in 1994, had the highest academic average GPA for the fall of 1998, and named Most Improved Lineman in Spring 1998. Andrey currently lives in Blythewood, South Carolina where he works as a Train Conductor with CSX Railroad and attends Little Zion Baptist Church.

DANIEL STUART WATSON

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Dan Watson is a 1988 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played and lettered in football and track. He won the Individual High Jump State Championship in 1987 and 1988, was named Track All State and All Region both years. In 1987, his team finished runner up in the State Track and Field Championships. As a Senior, Dan competed in the 1988 Southeastern Prep High Jump Championship with a record of 7 feet at the Golden South Classic Invitational meet in Orlando, Florida where he still ranks as the 10th best ever jump by a South Carolinian prep athlete and places him among only 7 SC High School Athletes to ever break the 7 foot barrier. Dan also competed in the 1988 Golden West Invitational National Championship in Sacramento, California where he won 4th place and the Keebler International Meet in Chicago, Illinois where he placed 7th in this world championship. Dan continued his education and track career at Brevard Junior College where he set a school record in the high jump of 6'11' and at Clemson University where he was a member of the 1992 Outdoor Track and Field ACC Championship Team. He has been involved in a number of civic organizations including Mauldin Chamber of Commerce, Greenville Chamber of Commerce, youth league coach for a number of sports, and Sponsor of Buddy Walk for downs syndrome children. Dan was named Agent of the Year in 2006 and 2007 with New York Life and member of Cincinnati Life President's Club in 2011. He has been a Senior Partner with Cambridge Financial Group since 2008.

David Hackett graduated from Greenwood High in 1970, where he was a three year letterman in football and baseball. David was the first Afro-American to play varsity football at Greenwood High and he was one of the first Afro-Americans to play varsity baseball. As a junior, he was a standout member of the powerful 1968 State Championship Football Team. Starting at both fullback and linebacker, David was known as a bruising running back and a strong tackler. In baseball, he was both an excellent hitter and a strong outfielder. David signed an athletic scholarship with Western Carolina University, where he continued both his academic and athletic careers. He currently lives in Greenwood.

JOE E. (JOEBIE) ADAMS, JR.

FOOTBALL

Joebie Adams is a 1951 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he played football for five years and was a member of the 1948 and 1949 State Championship Football Teams. He was appointed Captain by Coach Babb in 1950, played in the North South All Star game in 1951 and attended football camp for four years as a player and two years as a Grad Assistant. Joebie continued his education at The Citadel, where he played football until an injury prevented him from playing his last two years there. He graduated from The Citadel in 1955 was BS Degree in Civil Engineering and joined the US Army where he served from 1955 until 1957. Mr. Adams remained active in the Army Reserves through 1965 attaining the rank of Major. He served as the Director of the first GHS Athletic Booster Club and served as Co-Chairman of the committee that raised money to build JW Babb Stadium using no tax money. Joebie has served as President of Greenwood Jaycees and served as President of Greenwood Kiwanis in 1971 and 2010. He is a lifelong member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Greenwood where he has served and chaired a number of committees. Joebie served on Lander Foundation Board from 1987-2012 where he established two scholarships for Greenwood County students. He also established a scholarship at The Citadel giving preference to Greenwood County students. Joebie currently is Board Chairman of Greenwood Supply and Action Sports in Greenwood.

LARRY LECROY

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL

Larry LeCroy was a 1966 Greenwood High graduate who played football, basketball, and baseball. His senior year he was named MVP for both basketball and baseball and also served as captain for both teams. Larry continued his education and graduated from Gardner Webb University, where he was named one of the Outstanding College Athletes in America. He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 1968, but decided that his education was more important at the time. Larry then continued school and received his Masters Degree from Austin Peay State University where he served as an assistant Baseball Coach. He continued to teach Driver's Education and PE for over 30 years and taught Driver's Education to the elderly after school. Larry also coached Tee-ball, Little League, and High School baseball and football. He lived in Wildwood, Florida where he was a board member at Rolling Hills Golf and Country Club and was a member of First Baptist Church of Wildwood.

Larry Thomas is a 1960 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played football and track. He served as first string quarterback 1958-1959. In 1959, he was the leading scorer with 54 points, the first Greenwood High back to gain over a thousand yards in a season, and was named Mr. Emerald. Larry also earned Honorable Mention All South High School Football Honor Squad. He continued his education at Western Carolina College (University) where he was a three year letterman in football. Larry has been a member of Bascomb Lodge #363 for fifty years and past Master Post District Deputy Grand Master with 11th Masonic District of South Carolina. He attends and is a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church. Larry has held a number of positions including Superintendent of Quality Control at General Cable in Abbeville, SC and Quincy, Michigan, Surveyor Party Chief and Building Inspector for Greenwood County. He retired from City of Greenwood after serving sixteen years as Superintendent of Sanitation.

LASHONDA CHILES

VOLLEYBALL AND BASKETBALL

LaShonda Chiles graduated from Greenwood High School in 2003. While attending Greenwood High she excelled in Volleyball and Basketball. She was named Volleyball's Most Valuable Server two times, her senior year she received the Most Valuable Player Award and All Region Award. LaShonda was also awarded a number of Basketball Awards while playing at GHS including MVP, All Region, and All Lakelands Team. During her junior year, she was named Blue Christmas Classic Most Valuable Player and during her senior year she was named to the Carolina-Virginia Athletes Conference Women's Basketball First Team All Conference, three time CVAC Tournament MVP, two time East Region All Tournament Team, two time Anderson College Athlete of the Year, CVAC Player of the Year, and CVAC Athlete of the Year. LaShonda finished her collegiate career at Lander University, where she was named lander Women's Basketball All Time Leading Scorer with 2,885 points in her career, and inducted into the SC Athletic Hall of Fame Female Athlete of the Year Award. LaShonda graduated from Lander with a BS degree in Exercise Science, Minor in Health Agency Management, and Lead Exercise Physiologist.

MARIO LA'BRANDON BROWN

FOOTBALL, WRESTLING AND TRACK

Mario Brown is a 2000 graduate of Greenwood High School where he excelled in football, wrestling, and track. Mario was named an All Lakelands Player and All Region in Track all four years he played at GHS. He was also MVP, Region Champ, and All Lakelands Wrestler in 1998-1999. Mario was also named an All Lakelands Football player each of the four years he played at GHS. His senior year, Mario was named All State Football and a member of the 1999 Shrine Bowl Team. He held a number of football records including over 1,200 yards receiving in a single season, most yards in a single game receiving 273 yards, and longest kickoff return of 99 yards. Mario continued his education and played football at Georgia Military College and Western Carolina. He was a member of the 2002 National Championship Team at Georgia Military College where he was a team captain and the team's leading receiver. Mario is a long term employee with Credit Central of Greenwood and has served as Branch Manager and Financial Advisor for ten years.

R. SHELL DULA

COACH

Shell Dula is a graduate of Laurens High School and Presbyterian College. He was named to PC's 1960s Team of the Decade as Defensive Tackle. Coach Dula started his coaching career at Woodruff High School where he served as an Assistant Football Coach from 1969-1977. He then moved to Ninety Six High School where he was Head Football Coach from 1977-1986 and won the 1982 Class A State Championship. In 1986, Coach Dula took over as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Union High where he coached until 1997. During his time at Union, he won Division II AAAA State Football Championships in 1990 and 1995, was Head North-South Football All Star Game Coach in 1986, and Associated Press Football Coach of the Year for South Carolina in 1990. Coach Dula finished his coaching career at Greenwood High School where he served as Head Coach and Athletic Director from 1997 until December 2008. While serving at Greenwood High School, he won three Division II AAAA State Championships in 1999, 2000, and 2006, was named the 2002-2003 SCACA Athletic Director of the Year, inducted into SCACA Hall of Fame in 2004, and received the SCACA's Charles E. Stewart Award in 2006. During his coaching career, Coach Dula won 6 State Championships at 3 different schools and a total of 13 Region Championships. He has received a number of honors included being chosen to carry Olympic Torch through Union, SC in 1996 and received the SC Order of the Palmetto in April 2009. Coach Dula currently serves as Executive Director of the SCACA, Chairman of Greenwood School District 50 Board of Trustees, and on the Board of Directors for Lakelands FCA. He attends Main Street United Methodist Church in Greenwood where he teaches the Young Adult Sunday School Class.

CAROL "BOO" COLEMAN CHANONA-ACEWICZ

BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL AND TRACK

Carol Coleman Chanona-Acewicz is a 1980 graduate of Greenwood High School where she lettered for three years in basketball, volleyball and track. In basketball, Carol was team captain for 3 years and All Region for 3 years. In volleyball, she was team captain and All Region during her junior and senior years and was All Region for three years. Carol also served as President of her senior class and was named an Outstanding Senior. She received a Basketball scholarship to Erskine College in 1980. Carol attended Erskine College and Piedmont Technical College. She retired from the SC National Guard in 2006 with a total of 22 years of military service. During her military career, she received The Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, and received The Army Good Conduct Medal twice. Carol has been married for 23 years and has two children and one grandson.

Pete Hagood is a 1956 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played football and was a baseball pitcher. Pete was named "Best Lineman" for the undefeated 1955 State Championship Football Team and he was also call the "Heart and Soul" of that outstanding 1955 team. That same year, Pete was voted "Best All Around Athlete" at Greenwood High School. Pete has served on several committees including President of Calhoun Falls. Planning Committee and member of Calhoun Falls Strategic Plan Steering Committee. Pete is owner of Carolina Services, Inc. and Maintenance Engineer at GTE. He is an active member of Calhoun Falls United Methodist Church.

COURTNEY KAZETTE PERKINS

BASKETBALL

Courtney Perkins is a 2002 graduate of Greenwood High School where she was an outstanding basketball player. Courtney scored a total of 2,701 points in four years, as she became the first GHS girls basketball player to score more than 2,000 points in a career. She was named Team MVP for four years and was also MVP in North-South All Star Game during her senior year. Courtney continued her education and played basketball at Hiwassee College where she received several honors. She became the first female in school history to score 1500 points in a season. She was Team MVP for two years, Conference Player of the Year for two years, and MVP for 2004 National Junior College Tournament. Courtney is a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Coronaca, SC. She coaches AAU Basketball and is a public speaker talking to students about staying in school and the importance of an education.

DONNIE HENDERSON

Donnie Henderson was a 1960 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was a three year letterman in football, basketball and track. Donnie played quarterback for the 1959 State Championship Football Team, where he also served as co-captain. Donnie signed a football scholarship to attend Western Carolina University, where he started at quarterback for two years. His football career ended after his sophomore season due to a back injury. Donnie retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company after thirty-four years of service as Division Manager of Sales. Donnie was a Mason and member of St. Patrick Episcopal Church in Dunwoody, Georgia.

ERIC WILLIAMS

FOOTBALL, TRACK AND WRESTLING

Eric Williams is a 1979 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played football, ran track, and was an outstanding wrestler. As a sophomore, Eric was a member of the 1976 State Championship Football Team. During his senior year, he was team captain of both the football and wrestling teams. Also during his senior year, Eric was undefeated in wrestling with a 23-0 record and was the State Champion in his weight class. Eric continued his education at The Citadel on a wrestling scholarship. During his senior year, he won the Southern Conference Wrestling Championship is his weight class and he advanced to the 1983 NCAA National Tournament. Eric graduated from The Citadel as a "Distinguished Military Student". Eric served as a Major in the US Army where he received a Bronze Star for his service in Desert Storm. Eric has volunteered as a Wrestling Coach in a number of schools across the US and in Europe. Currently, Eric is Project Branch Chief for HUD in Atlanta, Georgia. He has two grown children and is an active member of Victory World Church's "Home Repair Ministries".

MILTON CUNNINGHAM

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Milton Cunningham is a 1960 graduate of Greenwood High School where he lettered for four years in football and track. Milton was a co-captain for the 1959 State Championship Football Team. In track, he set school records in the discus throw and shot put. Milton received several football honors following his senior year, including All State, All Southern, Shrine Bowl and Scholastic All American. After receiving a football scholarship to University South Carolina, he continued to play for three years. Milton was in the Army Reserve for six years and was named number one trainee in basic training. He worked two years as credit and operations manager for BF Goodrich and forty seven years as a commercial printing consultant. Milton lives in Lawrenceville, Georgia where he is a member of First Baptist Church.

RONNIE HENDERSON

Ronnie Henderson is a 1960 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was a three year letterman in football, basketball, and track. Ronnie was a captain of the 1959 State Championship Football Team. He was the leading scorer for the 1958 football team and he still holds the school record for the longest punt return (94 yards) in Greenwood High history. Ronnie signed a football scholarship to attend Western Carolina University, where he was a four year starter, playing both offensive and defensive back. He graduated in 1965 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Ronnie was a management supervisor in the textile industry for fourteen years, project manager for Triangle Properties for ten years, and is currently self employed as owner of the Dock Bar and Grill. He is a member of First Baptist Church of Greenwood.

WENDELL L. HALL

FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL

Wendell Hall is a 1952 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played football and baseball. After graduation, Wendell signed a professional baseball contract. He played minor league baseball for ten years with three different Major League Organizations: The Cleveland Indians, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wendell has been a high school football official for forty-two years. He officiated in the 2000 Shrine Bowl, 2001 North-South All Star game, and was elected to the SC High School Football Association Hall of Fame in 2002. Wendell has worked as a sales representative for 30 years and serves as a Deacon at First Baptist Church in Ninety Six, SC.

ALFRED F. "MONK" SNYDER

FOOTBALL

Monk Snyder graduated from Greenwood High School in 1959. He was an outstanding football player. He began attending football camp at Camp Dixie when he was in the seventh grade. Monk was a four year football letterman and a three time All-State selection. His senior year, he made the Associated Press All Big 15 Team and was captain for the Board of Coaches All Big 15 Team. Monk continued his education at Western Carolina University where he made Honorable Mention All Conference before an injury ended his career. Monk began his football coaching career in 1962 at Sylva Webster High School in Sylva, NC. He also coached at Chase High School in Forest City, NC for seven years. He was inducted into the Jackson County, NC Athletic Hall of Fame on 1995. Monk later worked for Hardees Restaurants for 29 years, where he supervised 34 restaurants. He attends Buford Street Methodist Church where he has served as Chairman for the Board for three years.

BRANDON DECARLOS FREEMAN

BASKETBALL

Brandon Freeman is a 2001 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was a four year varsity basketball letterman. He was named All Region three times and All State two times. During his senior year, Brandon averaged 27 points per game and led the team to the AAAA State Finals. He was selected to play in the North South All Star game and he was named SC AAAA State Player of the year, as well as AAAA Mr. Basketball for South Carolina. He continued his education at Chipola Junior College in Marianna, Florida, where he made All Conference two years, while leading his team in scoring both years. He then transferred to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where he was the team's leading scorer for two years and team MVP his senior year. He was also twice named to the Sun Belt All Conference Team. Upon turning professional, Brandon played one year in the NBA Developmental League before moving to Europe, where he currently plays for Belgium.

CARROLL SEXTON

RADIO ANNOUNCER

Carroll Sexton graduated from Flat Rock High School in Hendersonville, NC in 1943 and continued his education at the University of North Carolina and Duke University. Carroll was the radio announcer for Greenwood High School Football for over 30 years, including two State Championship games in 1968 and 1976. He also announced GHS basketball games for several years, as well as Greenwood Post 20 American Legion baseball for many years, including the 1958 Little World Series in Colorado Springs, Colorado. While announcing for Lander basketball, he produced a time-delayed broadcast for those games on the local cable network. Carroll received the SC Sportscaster Community Service Award for Exceptional Reporting in 1963, and in 1982 he received the JK Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in the Field of Educational Communications and Technology. Carroll was a World War II Veteran, member of the American Legion, and a member of the Golden Kiwanis Club.

DAVID WRENN

BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL

David Wrenn is a 1961 graduate of Greenwood High School were he earned 8 varsity letters in basketball and baseball. He was the basketball team starting center and leading rebounder for three years; however, baseball was where he excelled. David played varsity baseball from the eighth grade through the twelfth grade. As a ninth grader, he was a leading pitcher on the 1958 American Legion Post 20 team that was national runner up. His combined record in high school and Post 20 Baseball was 73 wins and 17 losses. His senior year, he threw 25 consecutive complete games, while compiling a 22-3 record. His career ERA was 0.85 and he recorded 27 shutouts. He threw six ho-hitters, one of which was a perfect game. He also threw 16 one-hitters and 26 two-hitters. Coming out of high school, David turned down a professional baseball contract, as he chose to continue his education with a full baseball scholarship at Clemson University. An injured arm cut short his career at Clemson. However, while at Clemson, he earned a BS, MS, and PhD is Chemical Engineering. David later received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. For the past thirty years, he has worked as a Pathologist for Spartanburg County and he is also a volunteer lecturer for numerous civic and scholastic organizations on medical pathology topics.

EMMETT TURNER

GOLF

Emmett Turner is a 2001 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he excelled in golf. During his high school golfing career, Emmett was a five time All Region selection and a three time All State selection. He won the 2000 AAAA High School Individual Championship . He was also named the 2000 SC Junior Golf Association Player of the Year and the 2001 SC High School League Mr. Golf. Emmett continued his education at Augusta State University where he received numerous golfing honors, including being named a two time NCAA Division I All American and a two time NCAA Division I Academic All American. As a amateur, he also won the 2003 Carolinas Amateur Championship and the 2005 SC Amateur Championship. He continued to play golf as a professional and he was named 2006 NGA Hooters Tour Rookie of the Year. He won Medalist honors at the 2009 Second Stage PGA Tour Qualifying School and he was a member of the 2010 Nationwide Tour. Emmett is an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Augusta, Georgia. He graduated July 2012 with a Master of Accountancy degree from Auburn University.

JAMES WIDEMAN

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, AND BASEBALL

James Wideman is a 1972 graduate of Greenwood High School, where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He was a football team captain and two time Most Valuable Offensive Player. During his senior year, James was selected to the North-South All Star Football team where he was the starting quarterback. He received a full football scholarship to Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC. In 1975, James set the all time school record for passing completions in a season. He was also a two time special team award winner, and two time player of the week. He graduated with a BS degree in Physical Education. James has received numerous awards for outstanding and dedicated musical services from area churches. He is currently serving as Minister of Music at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Saluda County. James has worked at GLEAMS Head Start Program for 35 years and been a member of the SC Football and Basketball Officials Associations for 14 years.

Buzzy Bowden is a 1952 graduate of Greenwood High School where he lettered in football four years. During his senior year, he was selected for the 1951 SC Shrine Bowl and was named to Parade Magazine's All American High School Football Team. Buzzy continued his education at The Citadel where he played football for two years until a career ending injury. He graduated from The Citadel with a degree in Business Administration and received the rank of Second Lieutenant in the US Army Reserves. After being called to Active Duty in the US Army in 1956, Buzzy served 25 years as an Army Officer and retired in 1980 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He then entered the civilian work force and retired in 1997 as a deputy project manager with a major in defense contractor. Buzzy is a regular participant in a number of non-profit organizations including March of Dimes, USO, Wounded Warriors Project, DAV, and United States Olympic Training Centers.

RAY DRUMMOND

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, BASEBALL AND TRACK

Ray Drummond is a 1962 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played football, basketball, baseball and track. He earned a total of eight varsity letters. He was a starting halfback on the 1961 Football State Championship team and a starting guard on the 1961 and 1962 basketball teams, where he helped Greenwood make it to the State Final Four on 1961. Ray played varsity baseball for four years. He played on three consecutive Piedmont Conference Championship teams and was a unanimous choice for the 1962 Piedmont Conference Baseball All Star Team. He also played American Legion Baseball for three years and was a member of the 1960 State Championship team. While participating in track, Ray qualified two years for the State Track Meet on the GHS Relay Team where his team placed 3rd and 4th. Ray has been active in a number of civic organizations in Greenwood including GHS Athletic Booster Club President. After 34 years, he retired from Greenwood Mills. Ray is currently on the Greenwood Soup Kitchen Board and a member of First Baptist Church of Greenwood.

TYLER RANDALL MOSLEY

FOOTBALL, WRESTLING AND TRACK

Tyler Mosley is a 1985 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was a three year varsity letterman in football, wrestling, and track. In 1984, Tyler was Football Team Captain, All State, All Region, Most Valuable Defensive Lineman, and chosen to participate in the North-South All Star Football game. He was also Region Champion in Wrestling in 1984 and 1985, and in 1986 was State Heavy Weight Champion. Tyler continued his education at Hampton University where he received a full football scholarship and was a four year starter. In September 1989, Tyler was named Conference Offensive Lineman of the week. Tyler has been a High School Assistant Football Coach for 16 years and Head Wrestling Coach for 11 years. He was named Wrestling Coach of the Year during the 2006-2007 school year and Teacher of the Year at Smithfield High School (Smithfield, VA) twice, 2004-2005 and 2008-2009. Tyler is a mentor and program developer with "Study Right Coaching" and a member of "Fellowship of Christian Athletes".

BENNY ROSS CANDLER

FOOTBALL

Benny Candler is a 1958 graduate of Greenwood High School where he lettered all four years in football. He played on the Football State Championship teams in 1955 and 1957. He served as Co-Captain on the 1957 team when he was chosen All State and All Big 14. Benny went on to continue his education at Mars Hill Junior College where he was named All Conference in football and baseball. After college, he was in the Army for three years. Benny has coached little league baseball and youth football for over 20 years and he started the Basketball Officials Association in 1969. For 18 years, Benny served as a System Analyst and Programmer maintaining the Electronic Voting System in the US House of Representatives.

BRAD M. RUSS

BASEBALL

Brad Russ is a 1988 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played baseball, football, and track. He was a four year starter for baseball where he established the South Carolina State High School record with 28 consecutive stolen bases during his junior season, named All State by the State Newspaper and GHS's first North-South All State Baseball player during his senior season, and had a career batting average of .335. Brad continued his education at Wofford College where he served as team captain and member of the Athletic Director's Captain Council in 1992. He has served as past president of Greenwood Touchdown Club, member of Burton Center Board of Visitors, and active member of South Main Street Baptist Church. Brad currently serves a Vice President for Gary Russ Chevrolet Cadillac, Inc.

CHRIS MUNNERLYN

TENNIS

Chris Munnerlyn is a 1986 graduate of Greenwood High School where he excelled in tennis beginning in the seventh grade. He was a six year letterman and won two State Championships during his high school career. Chris continued his education at Clemson University where he walked onto the tennis team and won Most Improved Player during his freshman year. Chris won a starting position during his sophomore year, was elected to the ACC Team in 1991, and finished his senior year as Clemson's number one singles and number one doubles position player. He continued to play tennis professionally where he was ranked in the top 350 in the world in doubles and top 450 in the world in singles. Chris earned his MBA from Georgia State University and is currently Director of Sales for Global Industrial Exchange.

DERRICK BUTLER YOUNG

FOOTBALL

Derrick Young is a 2001 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was a member of the 1999 and 2000 AAAA Division II State Championship Football Teams. During his senior year, he was selected to the All Region and All Lakelands Teams. Derrick holds the all time GHS football record for yards rushing in a career with 3016 yards. Derrick also ranks first and second in yards rushing in a single season, as he gained 1610 yards in 1999 and 1328 yards in 2000. Derrick ranks second in yards rushing in a single game with 226 yards. He received a four year football scholarship to North Greenville University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree. He has been Manager at Walgreens in Greer, South Carolina for the past five years.

LEE LEARY

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Lee Leary is a 1956 gradate of Greenwood High School where he played football and track. During his senior season in 1955 his football team was undefeated and he was named All American and played in the North/South Shrine Bowl. Lee went on to continue his education at Newberry College where he received a full scholarship in football. He has coached at Savannah High School and North High School. Lee entered the insurance business in 1972 and has served as President of Life Underwriters Association several times. He is currently part time building and grounds superintendent at Concord Baptist Church, where he is an active member having served as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, and in the Men's Ministry.

MACK LEE THARPE

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL

Mack Tharpe is a 1966 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played football, basketball, and baseball. In 1964, he led the football team with seven touchdowns and 634 yards rushing. Mack was a member of the 1966 State Championship American Legion Post 20 Baseball team and he was recognized nationally and recruited by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves. Mack continued his education at the University of South Carolina where in 1969 he was the leading tackler on the ACC Championship team and played in the Peach Bowl. He is a life long member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he has served as Sunday School teacher. Mack has coached youth leagues at Greenwood Parks and Recreation and Greenwood YMCA. He has been in the floor covering business for forty years.

RICHARD M. LOMAS

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Richard Lomas was a 1959 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played football and was a member of the track team. He was a three year letterman in football and was Co-Captain his senior year and was Lineman of the Year in 1958. He was a member of the 1958 South Carolina Shrine Bowl Team and a member of the South Carolina All State Football Team. Richard was the Pole Vault Champion on the Greenwood High Track Team in 1959. Richard continued his education at the University of South Carolina and was a three year letterman on the football team, and on the All ACC Honor Roll, and Tri-Captain in 1962. Richard was an active member of Trenholm Road Methodist Church in Columbia, South Carolina.

TRIPP WHITMIRE

FOOTBALL AND GOLF

Tripp Whitmire is a 1982 graduate of Greenwood High School where he lettered in football and golf. During the 1981 season, GHS Football team was Region Champs and Tripp was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl and a Centurion All American selection. He continued his education at the University of South Carolina and Lander University. Tripp has won Golf Club Championships at Star Fort Club in 1989 and at Greenwood Country Club in 1990 and 1991, and he was a County Am Champion in 1988. He is a member of First Baptist Church. Tripp is a past president of Ducks Unlimited and Ethics Committee Chairman with Greenwood Association of Realtors. He has been a multi million dollar producer with Greenwood Board of Realtors for over 25 years.

GREG MCBRIDE

GOLF, FOOTBALL, AND BASKETBALL

Greg McBride is a 1980 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played golf, football and basketball. He was named All Region in football and golf, All State in golf, and captain of the 1980 GHS Golf State Championship team. Greg continued his education at the University of South Carolina where he was a four year golf letterman, played in the NCAA Championship in 1984, and received the USC Ray Faircloth Award in 1985. Greg is currently a PGA Golf Professional and twelve time SC PGA Palmetto Cup team member. He is a board member for Fairway Outreach Golf Program and he hosts a charity program in the Dominican Republic for youth baseball players. Greg has been married to his high school sweetheart, Andrea, for 24 years.

IVAN SOUTHERLAND

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Ivan Southerland graduated from Greenwood High School in 1966 where he played and was named All State in both football and track. Ivan was a member of the Shrine Bowl football team and he won both shot put and discus events at the State Track meet. Ivan went on to continue his education and play football at Clemson. He was named All ACC, All State, and was drafted by Dallas Cowboys. He has served on a Prison Ministry for twenty years and County Chairman for Christian Coalition for four years.

JIMMY MAY

FOOTBALL, BASEBALL AND TRACK

Jimmy May is a 1957 graduate of Greenwood High School where he played football, baseball and track. He was named Most Valuable Back and to the All State Football team during the 1956 season and won the Upstate 100 and 220 Dash during the 1957 track season. Jimmy went on to continue his education at Clemson and Presbyterian College. He was a member of the 1959 Clemson Sugar Bowl Team and a three year letterman at Presbyterian. Jimmy has served on the Greenwood City Council, YMCA Board and Parks and Recreation Board.

JOE C. THOMPSON

FOOTBALL, BASEBALL, BASKETBALL AND SOCCER

Joe Thompson was a 1969 graduate of Greenwood High School where he lettered in football, baseball, basketball and soccer. Joe was going to be offered an athletic scholarship to attend Furman University; however, on October 18, 1968, during the homecoming football game, Joe suffered a broken neck. This accident ended Joe's athletic career. Coach Babb honored Joe by making sure that no other player wore Joe's #80 for the remainder of Coach Babb's career at GHS. Even though Joe was confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life, he continued to enjoy going to GHS football games, as well as Post 20 baseball games. Joe's life ended on August 10, 1981, due to complications related to his football injury. He remains the only GHS athlete in the history to pass away due to an injury sustained while competing in a school related athletic event.

JOHN THOMPSON

FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL

John Thompson graduated from Greenwood High School on 1980, where he excelled in football and baseball. He received All Region, All Area, All State and Honorable Mention All American recognition for football. John was a member of the 1979 SC Shrine Bowl Team. He also held the GHS record for the longest FG for 22 years. John's senior year his batting average for baseball was .400 and he led the team in HR's. He continued his education and played football at The Citadel where he received a Citadel Scholar Academic Scholarship and received a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1984. John is an active member of Northside Baptist Church, past president of GHS Athletic Booster Club, has chaired the GHS Athletic Booster Club Golf Tournament, has volunteered as a GHS football coach, and continues to be a radio color commentator for GHS football games.

MARK ANTHONY LOGAN, JR.

FOOTBALL

Mark Logan is a 2000 graduate from Greenwood High School where he excelled in football. He was named Football All Region, All Lakelands Players of the Year in 1998, member of the Shrine Bowl in 1999, member of the 1999 State Championship team, and was named SC Mr. Football in 1999. Mark went on to continue his education and play football at Georgia Tech where he won the Tech Way Award following his senior season. He joined the Greenville Force in 2010 and continues to be an active member of Zion Tabernacle of Faith Church and the Magic Johnson Life Center.

T. DALE BOYD

BASKETBALL, TRACK AND FOOTBALL

Dale Boyd graduated from Greenwood High School in 1962 where he played basketball, track and football. He was named "Player of the Week" by the Greenville Touchdown Club after scoring four touchdowns against Parker High School and he was also selected to play in the SC North-South All Star Football game. Dale attended Furman University on an Athletic Scholarship where he played football for four years. He is an active member of Durst Avenue Church of God, has coached youth baseball and football teams, and men's church league softball and basketball teams. Dale started working at Greenwood Mills in 1966 as a management trainee and retired after thirty-two and half years as Vice-President of Manufacturing.

DR. J.G. JENKINS, SR.

COACH

Dr. Jenkins was a Greenwood High School graduate who went on to continue his education at Emory University School of Dentistry. He started working with GHS athletics in 1943 assisting with football. Dr. Jenkins would schedule his vacation to coincide with football camp each year. He helped provide a generator for the camp, food and other necessary supplies, and took care of minor injuries. He continued this tradition for about 15 years. Dr. Jenkins was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, where he was a vestry member and served as junior warder. He was an original member of the YMCA board and once served as its' chairman. He was past chairman of the board of the Salvation Army, served on the school board of Greenwood School District 50, charter member and past president of the Greenwood Lions Club, and served as a District Chairman of the Long Cane District and Blue Ridge Council of the Boys Scouts of America. Dr. Jenkins received the Silver Beaver Award, scouting's highest honor.

EDDIE ESTES

FOOTBALL

Eddie Estes is a 1977 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was a three year starter for football. He was captain of the GHS 1976 State Championship team, selected to the 1976 All State Team, Shrine Bowl, Region I-AAAA All Star Team, and selected GHS 1976 Defensive MVP. Eddie continued his education and played football at Western Carolina University where he was a four year starter. In 1977, Eddie won the World Champion Enduro race. He continues to race with NASCAR Sunbelt Region where he was named Rookie of the Year in 1996. Eddie is a Free Mason Member, a member of FOP, NRA, North Carolina State Troopers Association, and the North Carolina Sheriff's Association.

FRANK WRIGHT

FOOTBALL

Frank Wright is a 1980 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was a four year starter on the football team. He won a number of awards including 1976 Best Defensive Lineman and 1978 Region I AAAA All Region Honors. Frank was a member of the 1979 Region Championship team and that year was named Lineman of the Year, Pasco Gettle Award for Outstanding Lineman, South Carolina All State Team, Shrine Bowl Player Most Valuable Defensive Lineman, and Prep All American Football team. Frank continued his education and played football at the University of South Carolina. He was a three year starter with the USC Gamecocks where he won a number of awards including being featured in the October 22, 1984 issue of Sports Illustrated. Frank was drafted and signed with the New York Giants in 1985 and then a free agent with the Indianapolis Colts in 1986. He is a member of the St Paul AME Church in Irmo, South Carolina and has worked for Michelin North America for twenty-two years.

JIM "JIMMY" MARCENGILL

FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL

Jimmy Marcengill is a 1961 graduate of Greenwood High School where he was an outstanding football and baseball player. He was a member of the 1959 AAA State Championship team and captain on the 1960 team. In 1960, Jimmy was selected to the North-South All Star team and selected Most Valuable Offensive Back. He was centerfielder and pitcher on the baseball team where he was selected to the Piedmont Conference All Star Teams in 1957, 1958, 1959, and 1960. In 1961, Jimmy was voted "Mr. Emerald". In 1961, he was awarded a football scholarship to University of Tennessee at Martin. Jimmy attends Westside Baptist where he has been a member since 1950. In 1997, he retired from 32 years of manufacturing management with Monsanto/Solutia.

KEVIN PENDLEY

GOLF

Kevin graduated from Greenwood High School in 1994 where he was an outstanding golfer. He was named an All Region Player three times. Kevin was the 1993 Region I AAAA Individual Champion and in 1994 he was named to the AAAA All-State Team. He continued his education and was a member of the golf team at Winthrop College. Kevin had five career individual victories while attending Winthrop, including Big South Champion in both 1997 and 1998. After completing his education, Kevin continued to play golf on the Nationwide Tour for four years and won the 2002 NGA Louisiana Classic. Kevin currently serves as the Head Men's Golf Coach at Winthrop University and was inducted into the Winthrop Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. He is an active member of West End Baptist Church in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

ROBERT L. STEVENS

FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL

Robert was a 1953 graduate of Brewer High School where he played football and basketball. He went on to continue his education at Allen University where he played football and basketball and in his senior year was selected as an All American of Small Colleges. After serving in the military, he coached football and basketball at Ware Shoals High School from 1959-1961. In 1959, he became the director of Seaboard Recreation Center where he helped organize a number of teams and served for 35 years. The center was later named R.L. Stevens Center in memory of Robert Stevens. He was a devoted member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Robert served as a football, basketball and baseball official and was a member of the SC Officials Association for ten years.

THOMAS MAULDIN

SOCCER

Thomas is a 1996 graduate of Greenwood High School. He was a five year starter for Varsity Boys Soccer at GHS. In 1992, he was named SC Newcomer of the Year. During this season of 1992-1996 Thomas was named All Region Player and in 1996 he was named All State Player. During his senior year, Thomas scored 10 goals in a single game and he set a single season state record of 56 goals. Thomas continued his education at Lander University. He currently owns and operates Mauldin Lumber Company and attends First Baptist Church of Greenwood.

TRAP HART

BASKETBALL AND TRACK

Trap Hart graduated from Greenwood High School in 1956 where he was an outstanding basketball player and a member of the track team. In 1956, Trap was named MVP for GHS basketball team and was selected to play in the North-South All Star Basketball Game. Also in 1956, he won second place in the high jump at the State Track meet. Trap went on to continue his education at Wofford College where he continued to play basketball. In 1960 Trap served as his team's captain, was selected as SC Basketball Player of the Year, and selected to the SC All State Team. After graduating from Wofford, he earned his MBA from the University of South Carolina. Trap has served as a Sunday School teacher for middle and high school students and served on the board of directors for Child Evangelism Fellowship and Board of Elders at Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church. Trap is a chartered Financial Analyst.

CHUCK HUNTLEY

FOOTBALL AND SOCCER

Chuck Huntley, a 1969 graduate of Greenwood High, was an outstanding student/athlete. He was the Vice President of his Junior Class and President of his Senior Class. He was voted the outstanding senior of the Class of 1969. Chuck was the captain of the 1968 AAAA State Championship Football Team and Co-Captain of the 1969 State Championship Soccer Team. He scored 20 touchdowns during the '68 season and was chosen to play in the North-South All Star Game. He received a full football scholarship to Clemson University and was a member of the Clemson Letterman's Association and a member of Clemson's Highest Honor Fraternity.

EDDIE BOLTON

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, AND BASEBALL

Eddie Bolton, a 1967 graduate of Greenwood High, lettered three years in football, basketball, and baseball. Following his senior football season, he was selected to the Shrine Bowl, All State, All Southern, and Scholastic All American teams. He was MVP in basketball his senior year, but baseball was his second outstanding sport. In 1966 between GHS baseball and American Legion he pitched 27 straight complete games and was named the American Legion State Player of the Year. He pitched a no hitter in winning the 1966 State Championship Baseball Game. Eddie attended USC lettering two years in football and three years in baseball.

GERALD WITT

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Gerald Witt, a 1971 graduate of Greenwood High, was a three sport athlete, excelling in football and track. Following his senior season he was named to the Shrine Bowl, All State and All Southern Teams. At GHS he was named MVP in both football and track, where he set the school record in the shot put. Gerald received an athletic scholarship to USC, lettering in football and track. Gerald became an educator and has risen to the top of his vocation. He has been recognized locally and nationally for the great job he did as Principal of Irmo High School. Twice the school was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Several times Gerald has been named Principal of the Year in South Carolina.

JOHN COLE DEVLIN, JR.

FOOTBALL

John Devlin, a 1963 graduate of Brewer High School, was an outstanding Fullback for the Bulldogs. He played so well for Brewer that he earned a four year athletic scholarship to South Carolina State University. John had a great freshman year and his future was very bright. However, on August 26, 1965 while preparing for his sophomore season, he had a heat stroke and died. His jersey, Number 31, was the first ever to retire at South Carolina State University. John was one of eight children born to John C. and Lillie P. Devlin.

LT. COLONEL GARY DONALD HILLEY

FOOTBALL

Donald Hilley, a 1950 graduate of Greenwood High, was an outstanding football player. He was a two way starter at tackle on two state championship teams, 1948 and the undefeated 1949 team. He was a team captain his senior year and was chosen to play in both the Shrine Bowl and the North-South All Star Game. Upon graduation he enrolled in Clemson University. Lt. Colonel Hilley served in the US Air Force from 1953 until his retirement in 1973. He was the recipient of multiple Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals, The Vietnam Service Medal, and The Bronze Star. He served in Military Air Command, Strategic Command, and Air Force One during the presidency of Richard M. Nixon.

RAY RIDDLE

BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL

Ray Riddle, a 1949 graduate of Greenwood High, played both basketball and baseball, but excelled in baseball. In addition to high school baseball, he played on both the 1947 and 1948 American Legion State Championship Teams. After attending Wofford College, Ray continued his baseball career in the Massachusetts Cape Cod League and in the Central and Carolina Semi-Pro Leagues. After his playing days, he coached the Post 20 American Legion Team for twelve years, leading the team to nine straight league championships and two state championships. Never losing his love for basketball, he was a high school basketball official for twelve years.

ROBERT PERLOTTE

FOOTBALL

Robert Perlotte, a 1977 graduate of Greenwood High, was an outstanding football player. He was Co-Captain of the 1976 State Championship Team, scoring 11 TD's as a wide receiver, punt returner, and defensive back. He was named All State after the '76 season and was chosen to participate in the Shrine Bowl. He continued his career at USC where he was a defensive back and a return specialist. Following the 1980 season, he was named All State, All South Independent, and honorable mention All American. His football career ended when he participated in Japan Bowl in 1982.

WAYNE BELL

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Wayne Bell, a 1963 graduate of Greenwood High, lettered in both football and track for three years. He was captain of Coach Babb's 1962 State Championship Football Team and was selected to both the All State and the Shrine Bowl Teams following the season. He received an athletic scholarship to Clemson University, starting 35 straight games at offensive end. Clemson won the ACC Championship on both 1965 and 1966, and Wayne was named All State following the 1966 season. Upon graduation Wayne served a tour of duty in Vietnam, receiving two Combat Air Medals and the Bronze Star. He currently serves as treasurer of the Greenwood Touchdown Club.

ANGELA LANIER

BASKETBALL AND TRACK

Angela Lanier, a 1996 graduate of Greenwood High School, played on a state runner up and two State Championship basketball teams from 1994-1996. She was voted the Most Valuable Player in 1995 Lander University Christmas Tournament and was named the Best Defensive Player in the 1996. However, track and field was the sport where Angela excelled. She was GHS Most Valuable track performer and All State for four consecutive years, 1992-1996. In 1996, she was State Champion in the long jump and state runner up in both the 100 and 200 meters. Upon graduation, Angela received an athletic scholarship for track and field to Winthop University. From 1997-2000, she was All Conference in the 60m, 100m, 200m, 4 x 100m relay, and the long jump. She was named Big South Athlete in 1997 and 2000 and still holds the school record in the Long Jump. Angela now coaches Basketball and Volleyball at Westminster Catawba Christian School in Rock Hill

BEN F. JOHNSON, JR.

BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL

Ben F. Johnson, Jr., a 1949 graduate of Greenwood High, played both basketball and baseball in high school, but excelled in baseball. While in high school he played on the American Legion Post 20 team for four years, helping them win the State Championship in 1947. Ben was nominated and selected to play for the US All Star Team by Gov. Strom Thurmond in 1948. After graduation, Ben turned down several scholarship offers and entered professional baseball as a pitcher in the Boston Braves organization. He played AAA ball before being inducted into the US Marines. While in the Marines, he continued to play baseball and helped his team win the East Coast Championship. In 1954, Ben went to spring training with the Milwaukee Braves and opened the season in the Major leagues. In both 1958 and 1959, he pitched in the Majors with the Chicago Cubs. He finished his professional career as a pitching coach and scout for the Houston Astros. Ben once struck out the great Ted Williams and later said, "I like to think I made him retire".

EDDIE SEIGLER

FOOTBALL AND SOCCER

Eddie Seigler, a 1969 graduate of Greenwood High, was outstanding in both soccer and football. He lettered two years in soccer and was a member of Greenwood's first soccer team in 1967. He was the place kicker fir the football team in both 1967 and 1968. He led the team in scoring both years, accumulating a total of 14 field goals and 68 extra points. His longest field goal was 43 yards. He was the first soccer style style kicker at GHS, and helped to lead the team to the 1968 State Championship. Eddie was awarded a full football scholarship to Clemson University, where he was the starting place kicker for three varsity seasons, 1970, 1971, and 1972. He led the team in scoring each year and finished his career with 30 field goals and 44 extra points for a total of 134 points. He set an ACC record for the longest field goal (52 yards) against USC in 1971 and tied it against Maryland in 1972. After his college career, Eddie was drafted by the NFL, Chicago Bears in 1973. He is a past president of the Greenwood Touchdown Club.

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, AND BASEBALL

Neville Files, a 1969 graduate of Greenwood High, was a three year Varsity Letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. During his senior year, 1968-1969, he helped the football team with the State Championship, the baseball team win the Upper State Championship, and was named the Most Valuable Player in basketball. During the 1968 football season, he accounted for 1,032 total yards, scored 13 TD's, had 7 pass interceptions, and as a result of his outstanding play, received a scholarship to the University of South Carolina. In addition, he was a four year starter for the American Legion Post 20 baseball team, which won the State Championship in 1967. While at USC he was a three year Varsity Letterman. His senior year, 1972, he led the team in interceptions with 4, had 33 tackles, and 3 fumble recoveries. He was named Sports Illustrated National Back of the Week for his play against Florida State. After the season, he was named USC's Most Valuable Player, selected to the South Carolina All State Team, and was chosen to play in the Blue-Gray All Star Classic.

ROBIN CARY

FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL

Robin Cary, a 1969 graduate of Greenwood High, excelled in both football and baseball. He was a three year varsity letterman in football and quarterbacked the 1968 team to the State Championship. Following the season, Robin was chosen to participate in the Shrine Bowl game, was named AAAA Back of the Year, All State, and to Parade and Sunkist All American teams. In baseball, he lettered four years and was a member of the 1966 State Championship and the 1969 State Rummer up teams. He also played on three Greenwood Post 20 American Legion State Championship teams. In 1969, he was drafted by the New York Mets, but accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Alabama. He lettered three years in football and was a member of the 1973 National Championship team. A 68 yard punt return against the University of Tennessee helped to win the game and preserve their unbeaten season. Robin was named All Southern Conference in baseball for three years, 1972-1974.

STACEY L. TURNER

BASKETBALL

Stacey L. Turner, a 1997 graduate of Greenwood High, was an outstanding basketball player who helped lead her team to back to back State Championships in 1995 and 1996. Her individual honors were numerous. Twice she was named MVP of her high school team and the Lander University Christmas Classic, and twice she was voted to the All Region Team. In addition, she was named All Lakelands, All State and a participant in the North-South All Star game. Upon graduation she received an athletic scholarship to Okaloosa-Walton Community College where she earned All Conference and honorable mention All American recognition. She then enrolled at Southern Louisiana University where she was named Most Valuable Player, Newcomer of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, Scholar of the Year, and All Conference. She concluded her basketball career playing in a Semi Pro League with the Houston Jaguars.

STEVE LLOYD

FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL

Steve Lloyd, a 1978 graduate of Greenwood High, was outstanding in both baseball and football. He was a three year starter on the baseball team, pitching and playing first base. He was a three year letterman in football. He started at offensive tackle on the 1976 State Championship team as a junior, and was the captain of the 1977 team. In 1977, Steve was chosen All Region, All State, and the South Carolina Shrine Bowl team. He received an athletic scholarship to Furman University where he played both baseball and football. He pitched on the baseball team for two years, and was a four year letterman, three year starter on the football team. While playing at Furman, the team won three Conference Championships and twice Steve was named to the All Southern Conference Team. He was Furman's Most Valuable Offensive Lineman in 1981. Steve is tremendously involved in the GHS Athletic Booster Club and serves a Chairman of the yearly golf tournament.

VALERIE WARREN

BASKETBALL

Valerie Warren, a 1996 graduate of Greenwood High was an outstanding basketball player. She played a very important part in our team winning the Upper State Championship in 1994 and back to back State Championships in 1995 and 1996. As a sophomore she was voted the Most Outstanding Defensive Player, as a junior she received the 110% award, and as a senior was voted Most Valuable Player. Twice Valerie was named to the All Region Team. Upon completion of her high school career, she accepted a full scholarship to Erskine College. She was named the Conference Freshman of the Year in 1997 and three times was name the team's Most Valuable Player. She is fourth All Time in both rebounding and scoring at Erskine. In 2000 she was named the recipient of the Todd Award, which goes to the college's Most Outstanding Student-Athlete. The award is based on sportsmanship, leadership, athletic ability, character, and academic standing.

WILLIE BLUFORD, JR.

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND TRACK

Willie Bluford, Jr., a 1968 graduate of Brewer High School, was an outstanding athlete participating in football, basketball, and track. However, it was football where Willie excelled. He played both fullback and linebacker for the Bulldogs varsity squad. He was a member of the Block B Club and finished second in the school weight lifting competition. Not only did Willie excel in athletics, but he was also voted senior class president by his classmates. Upon graduating from high school, he received an athletic scholarship to play football at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. At Marshall he was an outstanding linebacker with hopes of a professional career. If the NFL didn't work out, his plan was to attend a school of Mortuary Science or to become a teacher and coach. Willie was tragically killed, along with his teammates and coaches, when their chartered plane crashed outside Huntington as they were returning from an away game.

WILLIS BURKETT

COACH

Willis Burkett was an outstanding athlete. In high school, he was selected MVP in football, basketball, and baseball his senior year. In college he won a total of nine varsity letters; 4 football, 3 basketball, and 2 baseball. In 1971, Willis came to GHS as an assistant football and head boys basketball coach. Willis taught and coached at Greenwood High School for 24 years with the last 13 (1982-1995) being the position of Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. His football teams had an overall record of 111-47 and won four Region Championships. Both in 1989 and 1990 teams were undefeated during the regular season and were ranked #23 and #17 in USA Today. Willis has been both head coach and assistant in the North-South All Star game and has served as an assistant in the Shrine Bowl. He has served as President of the SCACA, the SCFCA, and the AAAA Athletic Directors. Willis ran his first marathon in 4 hours 23 minutes and qualified to run in the 2005 Boston Marathon.

BEN T. COATES, JR.

FOOTBALL

Ben T. Coates, Jr., a 1987 graduate of Greenwood High, was an All Region Football Player in 1987. He attended Livingston College where he participated in Football and Track. He was named the Most Valuable Players in both sports three different times. In 1991, Ben was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. From 1991-1999 he became the Patriots all time leading receiver at tight end. While with the Patriots, he played in Super Bowl XXXI and then in 2000 played in and won Super Bowl XXXV as a member to the Baltimore Ravens. He finished his career as the fourth all time leading receiver at tight end. He played in 158 games, had 499 receptions for 5,555 yards. After leaving the NFL, Ben returned to Livingston College as an Assistant Coach for three years and Head Coach for one year. In 2004, Ben served a coaching internship with Bill Parcells and the Dallas Cowboys and is now in his second season as Tight Ends Coach for the Cleveland Browns.

ERNEST DYE

FOOTBALL

Ernest Dye, a 1989 graduate of Greenwood High, was an outstanding Varsity Football player for three years. He was named the Most Valuable Defensive Lineman in 1987 and the Most Valuable Offensive Lineman in 1988. Both years he was chosen to the All Region Team and in 1988 was selected to represent South Carolina in the Shrine Bowl Game. After graduation he attended Itawamba Community College where he won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1992, was chosen All SEC in 1992, and played the Senior Bowl. In 1993, he was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the first round of the NFL draft. He was the 17th overall pick. Ernest has received numerous awards through the NFL including the Ed Block Courage Award and the Lloyd Herberg Most Courageous Player Award.

GEORGE HOBSON (SONNY) BYRD

FOOTBALL

George Hobson (Sonny) Byrd, a 1944 graduate of Greenwood High School excelled in football. He lettered three years and was captain and most valuable player of the 1943 team. In addition, he was chosen to represent South Carolina in the Shrine Bowl game in Charlotte and was also chosen to the SC All State team. Upon graduating from high school, Sonny received a scholarship to the University of South Carolina, but his career was cut short by World War II. He served his country during the war as a member of the US Navy. After his discharge from the Navy, he enrolled at Furman University and was voted captain of the 1948 team. While at Furman, Mr. Byrd was selected to be a member of the Blue Key National Honor Society. He died in an automobile accident at he age of 35.

KIEBLER JAMES

FOOTBALL, BASEBALL AND BASKETBALL

Kiebler James, a 1958 graduate of Greenwood High School, was an all around athlete lettering in Football, Baseball and Basketball. Even though he was good in all three, he excelled in Baseball, both at Greenwood High and for the Post 20 American Legion Team. He batted .426 during his senior year in high school and led his team to an outstanding season. He pitched and played shortstop for the Post 20 Team, leading them to a third place finish in the 1958 Legion World Series in Colorado Springs, Colorado. After batting .385, Kiebler was named the National Player of the Year for for the 1958 American Legion Season. He received a baseball scholarship to Clemson University and was the leading hitter on the Freshman Team.

LOWNDES P. SHINGLER

FOOTBALL

Lowndes P. Shingler, a 1957 graduate of Greenwood High School, excelled in football. He helped lead the 1955 team to a 12-0 record and the State Championship. He was chosen to play in the 1956 Shrine Bowl game in Charlotte. Upon graduation, he received an athletic scholarship to attend Clemson University. After Clemson's 1959 ACC Championship season, he was voted the most valuable player in the Bluebonnet Bowl. In 1960 he was co-captain of the team, First Team All ACC All-State Quarterback, Academic All American, and played in the East-West Shrine game in San Francisco. While at Clemson, Lowndes was a member of the Blue Key Honorary Fraternity, President of the Tiger Brotherhood, Executive Officer of the Student ROTC Cadet Corp., Distinguished Military Student and was voted Clemson University's Outstanding Senior in 1961. He was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys and the Oakland Raiders, but entered the US Army and was a player/coach at Fort Eustis, Virginia.

MARTY DYE

FOOTBALL

Marty Dye, a 1987 graduate of Greenwood High School, was an outstanding football player during his career. In 1984, his sophomore season, he was chosen as a Lineman of the Week by the Greenville News. In 1985, he was the GHS Most Valuable Defensive Lineman, and in 1986 was named to the All Area Team, All State Team, Class AAAA All State Team, and the National High School Coaches Association All American Team. Marty participated in the 1986 Shrine Bowl game and was voted the Defensive Player of the Game. He attended the University of South Carolina on a football scholarship and was a four year letterman for the Gamecocks. In 1991, he was chosen to the Associated Press All South Independent Team and was the Most Valuable Defensive Player for USC. Marty appeared in the motion picture "The Program" on the mid 1990s.

SAMMIE PICKENS

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, TRACK AND BASEBALL

Sammie Pickens, a 1960 graduate of Greenwood High, excelled in football, basketball, track and baseball. He played in both the 1957 and 1959 State Championship Football Teams. He lettered two years in basketball and was the 1959 team captain. Sammie lettered four years in track and was named the 1959 Track Most Valuable Player. During the 1960 Furman Relays, he won the long jump with a record jump of 24 feet 1/4 inches. While at Greenwood, he set or helped set records in the high jump, long jump, mile relay, medley relay, and most points scored in a meet (32). During the summer he played baseball for Post 20 American Legion Team. In 1958, the team traveled to Colorado Springs, Colorado for the Legion World Series and the 1959 Sammie hit .357 to help lead the team to State runner-ups. Sammie attended Furman University on a football scholarship. In 1963, he set a Furman record with a pass interception return of 95 yards. While at Furman, he also played baseball, making the All Southern Conference Team in 1962 with a batting average of .422.

TANNER CRONIC

TRACK

Tanner Cronic, a 1980 graduate of Greenwood High, was an outstanding all around athlete but excelled in Track. He lettered four years in Track and was twice Captain of the team. He was a three time Most Valuable Performer in the Field Events. In 1979 Tanner was second in the Long Jump at the State Meet and third in the Triple Jump. In 1980 he won the Triple Jump at the State Meet with a jump of 50 feet 3 1/2 inches; the top high school jump in the USA during 1980. He was named All State Track in both 1979 and 1980. Tanner received a Track scholarship to the University of Florida, where he was a four year letterman and was captain and Most Valuable Field Events Performer for the 1985 team. He won the 1984 Southeastern Conference Triple Jump with a jump of 51 feet 11 1/4 inches, and that same year was named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. Tanner currently has the University of Florida's #3 All Time Indoor Triple Jump and the #2 All Time Outdoor Triple Jump.

CLEVELAND SPENCER

BASKETBALL

Cleveland Spencer, a 1972 graduate of Greenwood High, was one of the best basketball players in South Carolina during his high school career. The 1970-1971 season saw him average 24 points and 22 rebounds per game, while during the 1971-1972 team had a 22-4 record, the second best record in the past forty years, and played in the Upper State Semi-finals. Cleveland was selected to the All State team and played in the 1972 North-South All Star game. He received a basketball scholarship to Florida A&M University. He ranks eighth in all time career points with 1478 and fourth all time in rebounding with 827. Cleveland played in 101 games at Florida A& M averaging 14.6 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.

ERIN POWELL WILLIAMS

TENNIS

Erin Powell Williams, a 1990 graduate of Greenwood High, was an outstanding tennis player. She was good enough to play #2 singles in seventh grade. Most of her high school career she played #1 singles and #1 doubles. She was selected All Region numerous times and was ranked in the state, the south, and the nation. She attended Furman University and led her team to four consecutive Southern Conference Championships. Each year Erin was selected All Conference in singles and doubles. She won the singles championship in 1991 and the #1 doubles championship in 1991, 1992, and 1993. She was selected to the Furman University Women's Tennis "Team of the Decade". She participated in the US Tennis Association Professional satellite circuit in the summers of 1990-1993, and has her Professional Teaching Certificate.

HOOTIE JOHNSON

FOOTBALL

Hootie Johnson, a 1949 graduate of Greenwood High School, was an outstanding athlete, excelling in football. He holds the school record for the longest rushing play, 94 yards, and ranks second in total points scored with 262. He rushed for 993 yards during the undefeated 1947 season and in 1948 was chosen for the All State team and the Shrine Bowl team. He continued his football career at the University of South Carolina, lettering three years and winning the Jacobs Blocking Trophy his senior year. After a successful banking career, Mr. Johnson retired as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Bank of America Corporation. In 1975, he became the second South Carolinian to receive the prestigious B'Nai B'Rith Outstanding Citizen Award. In 1999, "The State" newspaper named him one of South Carolina's 15 most influential business leaders in the 20th century. Today, he serves as chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club and the world renowned Masters Golf Tournament.

JOHN RALLY GILLIAM

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

John Gilliam, a 1963 graduate of Brewer High, was a three sport athlete, excelling in football and track. He received an athletic scholarship to SC State University to play both sports. He was chosen All Conference in football four times and All Conference in track three times. John was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the second round of the 1968 National Football League Draft. He played for eleven years in the NFL, and played in both the 1972 and 1973 Super Bowls with the Minnesota Vikings. He was a NFL All Pro Selection and a participant in the Pro Bowl 4 times, 1972-1975. He ended his career with 490 receptions for 7,650 yards and 49 TD's. In 1983, he was inducted into the SC State University Hall of Fame and has been inducted in the SC Athletic Hall of Fame.

LARRY BERNARD RYANS, JR.

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Larry Ryans, a 1989 graduate of Greenwood High, was outstanding in both track and football. He was All State and All American in track and in 1989 was voted not only the most outstanding overall athlete in our state. In leading his team to the AAAA State Championship in 1989, he won both the 110 meter and the 300 meter hurdles. He was a gold medalist at the Golden West and Golden South Track Classic and was a Sliver Medalist at the Keebler International Classic. His time of 14.31 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles in 1989 was the fastest recorded by a high school athlete in the nation that year. He received an athletic scholarship to Clemson University to run track and play football. He was a five time All American in track, winning the ACC Championship in the 55 meter hurdles, the 110 meter hurdles and 4 x 100 meter relay. He played seven years of professional football in the National Football League and the NFL Europe.

RONNIE AUGHTRY

FOOTBALL

Ronnie Aughtry, a 1954 graduate of Greenwood High, was an outstanding football player. He played in both the Shrine Bowl and the North-South All Star game. He was co-captain of the 1953 Greenwood team and was chosen All State and Honorable Mention All American. After attending Wofford College and playing football for two years, Ronnie joined the US Marine Corp for three years. After his discharge, he finished his college career at Western Carolina University and in 1958 was chosen All Conference. From 1969-1977 Ronnie was Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at McCormick High School. His teams won three Conference Championships. He served as an Assistant Coach in the Shrine Bowl and as both an Assistant and Head Coach in the North-South game. He was selected as one of the Lakeland's Greatest Football Players of the 20th Century.

TED WINGARD

FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL

Ted Wingard, a 1963 graduate of Greenwood High, was an outstanding athlete, excelling in football and basketball. He played in the Shrine Bowl and the North-South All Star football games. He quarterbacked Greenwood to championships in 1961 and 1962. He holds the Greenwood High record for best pass completion percentage for a season, ranks third in career passing TD's and fourth in career passing yardage. Ted was also an outstanding basketball player earning All State recognition in 1963. He received and athletic scholarship to play football at the University of South Carolina. Following graduation from USC, he received medical training at Emory, Johns Hopkins, and MUSC. He was chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Memorial Hospital from 1994-2000.

WILLIAM E. (BILL) HUGHES

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

William E. (Bill) Hughes, a 1956 graduate of Greenwood High, was an outstanding athlete in both football and track. He was co-captain of the undefeated 1955 football team and the undefeated 1956 track team. He was First Team All State in football, and won first place at the State Track meet in both the long jump and the 110 yard high hurdles. He finished second in the 100 yard dash and ended up earning the most points at the State Meet. Bill attended The Citadel where he was a four year letterman in both football and track. He was voted Second Team All State in football in 1959. He was the Southern Conference Long Jump Champion in 1958 and the SC Long Jump Champion in 1959. He is a co-founder and the first President of the Greenwood Touchdown Club.

HARVEY T. WHITE

FOOTBALL

Harvey White, a 1956 graduate of Greenwood High School, was co-captain of the football team for 2 years, and in 1955 quarterbacked the team to a perfect 12-0 record and the State Championship. In 1955, he was selected as the SC High School Athlete of the Year and played in the Shrine Bowl Game. Harvey received a football scholarship to Clemson University and was the starting quarterback for 3 years. He made the College All State Team in 1957, 1958, and 1959 and was selected to the All ACC First Team in 1957. He was an Academic All American and was national "Back of the Week" in 1958 vs Vanderbilt. In 1960, he was the first player to sign a contract with the Boston Patriots. He was inducted into the Clemson University Hall of Fame in 1981.

JOAB M. (JOE) ANDERSON

FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL

Joe Anderson, a 1959 graduate of Greenwood High, was an outstanding athlete, excelling in football and basketball. He played in both the Shrine Bowl and the North-South All Star Football games in 1958, and earned All State recognition in basketball. Joe was a three year letterman in football while attending Clemson University and started at quarterback for two years. He was an outstanding student, receiving the Ferris Mobley Award for academic excellence. He spearheaded the campaign to build a new YMCA for Greenwood and the building was posthumously dedicated in his name in 1997. In 1993, he was awarded the "Order of the Palmetto" by Governor Campbell.

J.W. "PINKY" BABB

FOOTBALL COACH

Coach "Pinky" Babb, a graduate of Honea Path High School and Furman University, was the Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Greenwood High School for 39 years (1943-1981). His teams compiled an unbelievable record of 336-81-23 and won nine state championships. He was named SC Coach of the Year four times and was the Head Coach in both the Shrine Bowl and North-South All Star football games. He was the first high school coach to be induced into both the SC Athletic Hall of Fame and The Helms Foundation Hall of Fame. Coach Babb was a charter member and past president of the SC Athletic Coaches Association, and is a member of that organization's Hall of Fame.

LEONARD H. "BUDGIE" BROOME

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Budgie Broome, a 1953 graduate of Greenwood High, earned three letters in both football and track, and was co-captain in both sports. He received the Best Back Award three years on a row. He played in both the 1952 Shrine Bowl and North-South All Star games, winning the Most Valuable Player Award in the North-South game. Budgie received a football scholarship to The Citadel, where he was a three year letterman and captain of the team. He was chosen All Conference and received the Best Back Award during his career. He set many records and for 48 years has held the record for punt return average. He is a member of The Citadel Hall of Fame.

LUTHER A. BRADLEY

FOOTBALL COACH

Luther Bradley, born in Hemingway, SC is a 1946 graduate of Tomlinson High in Kingstree, SC. An outstanding high school athlete, he excelled in football and received an athletic scholarship to attend South Carolina State University. He was an All Conference Player in 1948 and an All American in 1949. He has been inducted in the SC State University Hall of Fame. He was an Assistant Coach at Brewer High School from 1951-1955 and was the Head Football Coach from 1956-1968. While the head coach at Brewer, his teams won approximately 80% of their games. In 1967, they lost 7-6 to Carver High in the State Championship Game.

MILTON NICHOLSON

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Milton Nicholson, a 1964 graduate of Brewer High School, was a three sport athlete excelling in football and track. In 1962 and 1963, he was voted the Best Offensive Back in football and made the 1963 All State Team. He received a football and track scholarship to attend South Carolina State University. In 1965, he was voted Honorable Mention All Conference and in 1967 was voted All Conference Defensive Back. He was inducted into the SC State University Hall of Fame in 1998. Milton began his coaching career at SC State, coaching defensive backs and track from 1971-1973. He was Athletic Director and Coach at Roberts High from 1973-1980 and held the same positions at Holly Hill Roberts from 1981-2004.

RAY BOWICK

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND TRACK

Ray Bowick, a 1952 honor graduate of Greenwood High, earned nine varsity letters while participating in football, basketball, and track. In 1951, he was captain of the Greenwood football team and was selected to participate in the Shrine Bowl. Because of his loyalty to GHS, he chose not to accept the Shrine Bowl invitation, but instead played a final regular season game. Ray played on both the 1948 and 1949 State Championship teams and won the sportsmanship award three different years. He was an outstanding track performer and for years held several school records. He received a scholarship to play football and run track at Clemson University and played on their 1958 Sugar Bowl team.

ROBERT BROOKS

FOOTBALL AND TRACK

Robert Brooks, a 1988 graduate of Greenwood High School, excelled in both football and track. He was a 3 year letterman in football and in 1987 was named to the All State team and the Shrine Bowl team. He was a 2 time state champion in bot the 110 hurdles and the 300 intermediate hurdles. He attend the University of South Carolina where he was selected to the Freshman All American team in 1988 and was a 3 year starter. He ranks third in a career reception and in career yardage. He holds the USC record for the 110 hurdles. He graduated from USC in 3 1/2 years and became a member of the Green Bay Packers. He was a member of the 1995-96 Super Bowl Championship team, making the All Pro and the All Madden teams. He holds the NFL record for the highest career punt return average and longest pass reception (99 yards) and three Packers' receiving records.

SONNY HORTON

FOOTBALL

Sonny Horton, a 1948 graduate of Greenwood High, played three sports but excelled in football. He scored 55 touchdowns during his high school career and holds the school record for most points scored in a career. He was captain of the 1947 team and played in The Shrine Bowl. He made the SC All State Team in both 1946 and 1947 and was chosen to the All South Team in 1947. Sonny received an athletic scholarship to Furman University and was captain of the 1951 football team. That same year, he was selected to the SC All State Team. He continued playing football while a member of the US Army. In 1984, he was elected to the Furman University Hall of Fame.

TYLER HELLAMS

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, AND TRACK

Tyler Hellams, a 1967 graduate of Greenwood High, received 4 varsity letters in track, 3 in football, and 2 in basketball. He played in the 1966 Shrine Bowl and the 1967 North-South All Star Game. In 1966, he was chosen the AAA Back of the Year and was selected to numerous All State Teams. He was the Most Valuable Track Performer at GHS 3 years in a row. He was selected the Most Outstanding Field Event Performer at the Southeastern Track and Field Championships in Atlanta. He set state records in the long jump and low hurdles and won 3 gold medals at the 1967 State Meet. He lettered 3 years in football and track at the University of South Carolina and each year made the All ACC Academic Team. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1971.
